  • Activities That Work for Children, Katherine Mackay (Pearson Education). Children at the elementary level often have short attention spans and retaining their interest can be a challenge for the language teacher. This practical workshop will show how through careful planning and a balanced approach, children can gain the confidence they require to participate fully in the class. A variety of activities, songs and games will be demonstrated.
  • Versatile Card Games, Yukie Kawaguchi. Common problems among teachers who teach young learners are running out ideas since children are always look for something new! Instead of spending long time to read a lot of book and preparing material, why don't you think about simple variations of common card games? Common card games work for everyone young to older students and beginners to advanced. A little variation idea will save your time and create more fun in your classroom!
  • Monbusho's Handbook, Tom Merner.
More is being planned, so visit the mini-conference web site for the latest details.

Time: 1:30 PM - 2:50 PM (Sun., October 14th, 2001)

Fee (One-Day members): 500 yen (for both of today's presentations)
Prefecture: Hyogo
City: Kobe
Venue: Kobe YMCA 4F LETS (between JR Sannomiya and JR Shin-Kobe)
Description: How did language evolve in the human species? Why do humans have a complex symbolic communication system that other species appear not to possess? What is the neurological correlate of language; how do mere neurons and synapses combine, communicate, and interact to create linguistic meaning? Advances in cognitive science, neurology, paleontology, and neurolinguistics are drawing back the curtain that has veiled the inner workings of the human brain. Psychological, symbolic-mathematical, or social theories of language are insufficient; they do not adequately address the indisputably biological nature of our species' linguistic ability. This presentation will attempt to draw together thestrands of evolution, brain science, and linguistics to portray at least in a rough way how nature might have formed language in the human animal.
(This is followed by a second presentation by Marie Nelson)
