Gaining a Better Understanding of Student Perceptions of University Education

Speaker: Mehran Sabet, Seigakuin University
Time: 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM (Sun., June 20th, 2004)
Fee (JALT members): free
Fee (One-Day members): 1,000 yen
Prefecture: Saitama
City: Omiya
Venue: Shogai Gakushu Sogo Center (near Omiya Station, west exit, see map).
Description: University teachers in Japan sometimes feel frustrated as to why their students do not take their studies more seriously and instead focus mainly on their interests, friends, and part-time jobs. About 800 students from two different universities responded to a variety of questions and the results reveal that students have different values and perception of university life in comparison with teachers. The gap may look wide, but a closer look at the society and its expectation of university education tells us that our students may not be far from what they are supposed to be doing. However, as teachers it may be helpful to know more about the students we are teaching, since a better understanding of the situation can result in adjusted expectations and better communication.

Venue: Shogai Gakushu Sogo Center (near Omiya Station, west exit, see map).
Description: Whether your classroom style is more teacher-fronted or more learner-centered, you can easily make room in your lessons for students to engage in critical self-reflection. Whether your students are highly motivated or less invested in their learning, self-evaluation can be a tool for promoting critical thinking and learner autonomy, or simply a way to effectively communicate your expectations in the classroom. In this workshop, the presenters will discuss the benefits and limitations of reflective self-evaluation and demonstrate several practical techniques for using self-evaluation in a variety of language classroom contexts.
