Teaching Global Issues and Language

Speaker: Greg Goodmacher
Time: 1:30 PM - 4:00 PM (Sun., February 26th, 2006)
Fee (JALT members): free
Fee (One-Day members): 500 yen
Prefecture: Hokkaido
City: Sapporo
Venue: Hokkai Gakuen University, Toyohira-ku, Sapporo
Description: Combining the teaching of language skills with the teaching of global issues presents challenging problems that teachers do not usually encounter in general English classes. In many cases, students do not have sufficient background knowledge required for understanding global issues, or they may not care at all about them. We must stimulate students to feel connected to this topic. Teachers must decide what content and what language aspects to teach, and that in turn leads to the quandry of what we should later test. The presenter plans to have attendees actively explore materials and techniques that have proven useful for language and global issues education. Teachers will leave with ideas and activities for their own classes.
