Putting Words in their Mouths: Dictogloss, Shadowing, and Summarizing

Description: This presentation will cover three activities that give students structured language practice: dictogloss (grammar dictation), shadow talking and summarizing. With dictogloss, students actively recreate the spoken text,discuss differences and missing information with partners, and participate in a review of the grammar of individual sentences. The presenter will also explain some variations on the standard dictogloss method and provide extension activities that involve a picture story that corresponds to the dictogloss narrative. Shadow talking, which simply involves the repetition of spoken input, can be done out loud or silently by students. Summarizing an article with a mind map will also be covered. Presentation materials come from the presenter's self-published, non-profit, global issues textbooks.

Bringing About Language Learning Using Learning Strategies at Junior High Schools

Description: This presentation is given in Japanese. Quite a few studies have reported that the use of learning strategies is an effective way to develop learner autonomy. But most of them address adult education in foreign countries. The objective of this study is adjustment of those theories of learning strategies to the reality of English education at the junior high school level in Japan.The speaker, a junior high school English teacher since 1991, holds a master of education degree from Akita University and spent a year doing research at the Akita Sougou Kyouiku Center. His research interests include application of pragmatics to junior high school texts, learning strategies, and the systematic use of classroom English.

Integrating Culture into the Language Course

Description: If one wants to integrate culture into the language classroom, where does one start? Culture, after all, is a huge topic - one could conceivably do "holidays and food", then go on to "customs", "religion", "shopping", and so on...but where does it end? How does one know when enough culture topics have been taught and the course is, well, finished? In this workshop presentation the speaker will propose a template approach to teaching culture in the language course. Christine Winskowski is a recent arrival to Japan and teaches in Iwate Prefectural University's Department of International Cultural Studies. Her interests include culture and language, discourse analysis, and recently, the lexical approach to language teaching.

I've Got a Problem

Description: While most would agree that memorizing words and patterns is necessary for language learning, other mental activities are necessary as well. Most of the tasks in textbooks, however, tend to emphasize activities or tasks that require memory alone. The purpose of this workshop is to experience ways to decrease the number of times students say "Sorry, I can't remember." Said another way, if you participate in the workshop, you will learn ways to alter activities in textbooks that require only memorization so learners have opportunities to process language and use problem-solving skills as well.I hope that in addition, participants will see that the common expression "I've got a problem." has the potential for being a positive statement rather than a negative statement. If we do not have problems to seek solutions to, learning can be hindered.

Testing - An Important Component in Language Teaching

Description: Mention the word "testing" and many people grimace and groan. It seems that testing has a bad reputation, at least in some circles. Testing does not need to be viewed as a necessary evil; rather, it is an important component in language teaching, for both teachers and students. In this session, participants will first examine sample test items and evaluate them (e.g., What is being tested? How is a student being tested? Is the test appropriate?). We will then go over kinds of tests and test-making guidelines. Finally, we will do some item-writing, creating tests for our own various teaching situations.Brenda Hayashi works in the Dept. of Intercultural Studies at Miyagi Gakuin Women's University (Sendai, Miyagi).

Description: In today's communicative-based English language classes, teachers strive to include task-based, student-centered activities to enhance their instructional techniques. In addition to the four skills, there is a need to expose students to cross-cultural ideas. A very good way to augment communicative language teaching and to foster cross-cultural understanding is to include videos in the classroom to demonstrate visually the actual language and culture of the language. In this presentation, Leonard will demonstrate a variety of techniques using videos to get the most out of the language class.

Rules, Patterns and Words: A Pedagogic Description of Language

Description: Dave Willis will show how grammar and lexis, contrary to traditional notions, are indeed related. He will look at the implications of this interrelationship for language teaching. Willis has worked in ELT for almost forty years. He worked as a teacher and teacher trainer in Ghana, Cyprus, Iran and Singapore as well as the UK. He recently retired from his job as a Senior Lecturer working on MA TEFL/TESL programmes at Birmingham University, but continues to be active in ELT writing and running consultancies. He has written extensively on discourse analysis, task-based learning and pedagogic language description. His latest book Rules, Patterns and Words: Grammar and Lexis in English Language Teaching will be published by Cambridge University Press in December of 2003.

In this workshop, we will look at ways to involve different learners in English lessons. All the activities have been tested in the presenter's classes. Various Christmas activities suitable for the EFL classroom, including ways to use The Snowman, will be shared.
