Teaching Writing EFL

Description: Writing instruction has been shaped by two paradigm-shaping articles, one about the process of writing, and one about how different cultures organize their writing differently. Curtis Kelly, a professor at Heian Jogakuin University, will discuss the fascinating theories these articles spawned, and give suggestions for their application in class. So if you teach writing, reading, or you wonder why Japanese essays seems so vague, or even if you are Japanese and you want to learn how to organize your writing better, then come; there will be something for you. Kelly will also offer some suggestions on writing assignments that lead to self-discovery.

Effective Communicative Teaching Ideas for All Ability Levels:
The basis for this seminar is that a good classroom activity is effective for all levels. Participants will learn six teaching ideas focusing on effective ways of using group and pair-work in class, in order to keep students on task and to maximize the use of English during the lesson.
Textbook Activities: Making Them Work for You:
In this workshop, Rebecca Arthur will demonstrate a variety of ways to adapt textbook activities to better suit the EFL learners in your classroom. Although based on activities for false beginners, these adaptations are suitable for almost any level.

Description: Language teachers need to be aware of the culture in their lessons and the impact it has on students. This workshop will focus on how language and culture intersect in the classroom utilizing a framework developed by Patrick Moran. The presenters will discuss their work with the culture underlying conversation strategies and invite participants to apply the framework to their own teaching situations and content.

Two presentations: (1) Global Issues and Creative Mind-Mapping; (2) Testing Basics: The ABCs

Description: The first presentation examines how students from various countries perceive the world and shows creative ways for students to "map out" their world views. Four personal mapping exercises which challenge so-called "objective" world views will be demonstrated. Practical hints for using mind mapping in class will be underscored.
The second presentation focuses on basic classroom assessment and testing procedures. It explains some basic testing information resources and some alternative assessment approaches. Practical issues concerning portfolio assessment, negotiated grading, and student-generated tests will be considered.
Tim Newfields is coordinator of the JALT Testing and Evaluation SIG an editor of the Global Issues SIG web page. He teaches at Nanzan Junior College in Nagoya and has an MA degree.

Pot Luck Party and Workshop in Beautiful Mino Park

Description: Wade Muncil, an English instructor in the Kansai area, will lead a collaborative workshop on reflective teaching practice, peer mentoring, and using council in the classroom. Participants should bring a notebook as well as food to share. In case of rain the workshop will be held at Maple Hall in Mino. Annual business meeting with officer elections will follow the workshop. Meet at Hankyu Mino station (25 minutes north of Umeda) at 13:00.
