The Pleasures of Poetry - New Australian Voices

Description: How long since you treated yourself to an afternoon of poetry? David Gilbey, whose collection of poems Under the Rainbow was published in 1996 while he was here in Sendai for a year, and who includes poetry in his current Australian Studies course at Miyagi Gakuin Women's College, will present a reading, with commentary, of recent Australian poetry from some of the best contemporary Australian writing published. Kate Llewellyn, Kevin Hart, John Millett, Philip Norton - maybe the names are not familiar to you - but the styles and foci vary so there should be something for everyone (eg. sexual politics, documenting history, new spiritualities, urban vernacular, maybe the absence of kangaroos....). Copies of the poems will be provided as small (antipodean?) windows onto world English.

TESOL 2001 Reports, Ice-breakers and Issues for Part timers

Description: This month's meeting is a three part affair. The first (brief!) session will concentrate on members' reports from TESOL 2001, held last month in St. Louis Missouri, and will discuss some of the trends brought up by the conference. The second session will focus on Ice Breakers for the new groups and the start of classes. Bring along any suggestions you have! The final session will concentrate on the issues faced by part-time instructors at Japanese universities. We will examine the type of materials that publishers provide that go some way to assist these instructors in their situations.

Using Self-Access in a Japanese Junior High School

Description: This workshop will include an account of the introduction of a mini self-access system at Nishiyama Junior High School in Sendai, to befollowed by an open forum about learner autonomy, self-directed learning, and how the introduction and use of self-access in Japanesesecondary schools can complement the current syllabus and cater more effectively for the students' different learning styles and needs. The motivational dimension of using self-access will also be discussed. Also presented: Foreign Language Anxiety and JTEs, a short presentation of the initial findings of a small exploratory study into whether JTEs as non-native EFL teachers experience foreignlanguage anxiety and the possible pedagogical implications of this affect on the EFL classroom in Japanese junior high schools.

English Teaching and Learning on the Internet - Current Status and Future Issues

Description: Since the early 1990s, the Internet has become an increasingly viable venue for the teaching and learning of English. This communication system offers a treasure trove of materials and resources for students and teachers alike, and provides a wide variety of opportunities for English language practice and development. This meeting will examine the current status of English teaching and learning on the Internet, and will also discuss some of the resources available to those involved in this field. The latter section of this presentation will explore some of the developments in this area, especially that of on-line EFL education and teacher training. About the speaker: Anthony Crooks has been involved in the ESL/EFL field since 1988, working in Australia, Korea, Thailand and now Japan. He is currently lecturing at Miyagi Univeristy of Education and is attempting to obtain his Doctorate in TESL, concentrating on the issue of on-line teacher training for non-native speakers of English.

Running a Private English Language School

Description: The presenter will discuss the pros and cons of running an Eikaiwa school and the different ways these schools can be run. Running one's own school as opposed to taking a teaching job elsewhere, and the different teaching styles between the two will also be discussed. Finally, the presenter will talk about the financial advantages and disadvantages to life in the Eikaiwa world. About the speaker: Rod Deering holds a Bachelor of Arts from La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia. Since the early 1990s he has been in Japan and has worked as an Assistant Language Teacher and English Teaching Consultant in Sendai, taught at a variety of eikaiwas and now owns his own eikaiwa. He is also curretly a teacher at Tohoku Gakuin and Tohoku University, Igakubu.

Discourse as a Solution to the Teaching of Requisite English

Description: This presentation will focus on the use of discourse in English language instruction. Firstly, it will present an account of how the presenter was confronted by some challenges, particularly in respect to terminal, requisite courses for science and technology students. Secondly we will examine a number of solutions in the field of discourse to which the presenter was steered. Thirdly, there will be an account of how discourse was rationalized with communicative techniques and the mandates set out by the institutions. Fourthly, there will be some background detail relating to students and their requirements. Finally, participants will be furnished with a number of printed samples of lesson materials. The presenter and the participants will discuss the actual use of these materials.

Overall, this presentation will focus more the results of teaching and learning practice and subsequent subjective assessment as opposed to objective research; however participants are strongly encouraged to provide input in regards to any academic research that they feel relates to the subject.

Description: December 16 is Sendai JALT/TALE's year-end meeting, which features chapter elections, general business and reports by those who attended this year's JALT conference - PAC 3 at Kitakyushu - held over the weekend of November 23 to 26.
Please Note: We will be meeting at the Asahigaoka SHIMIN center, the center immediately above Asahigaoka bus/subway station.
The meeting will be followed by a bon-enkai downtown. The venue will be "Kichi Kichi" in Ichibancho (close to Mitsukoshi). Their menu features a wide variety of food from around Asia, and Keith Adams and Tony Crooks can personally testify to the quality of the dishes on offer. Keith has negotiated a meal package which includes a choice of 4 dishes per person and a nomihodai (wine, beer, mixed drinks etc) lasting two hours for a grand total of 3500 yen per person.
