Beat Generation Literature in America

Description: The 1950's was a revolutionary time in American Literature primarily because of a group of crazy, hip freethinkers from San Francisco called the Beats, whose style (in writing and life), candor and subject matter broke taboos and opened discussion about sexuality, gender, peace, environmentalism and many topics which still inspire heated debate today. Focusing on some of the main figures in the Beat movement (Jack Kerouac, Gary Synder, Allen Ginsberg) and their history and influences (especially Buddhism), we will investigate how a fringe literary group became one of the defining elements of an era in American history.

Chris is an ALT at Yamagata Technical High School and Yamagata East High School. He studied literature at Humboldt State University in California.

Filming and Editing in the Language Classroom

Description: Teachers are well aware of the benefits of using video materials to expose students to language and cultural awareness. An alternative currently being explored is the option of students'produced video productions. This presentation will demonstrate some approaches for incorporating filming awareness in the classroom. Some teaching preparations for development of such a project will be discussed. Some examples of current research by the presenter who works at Tohoku University, Sendai will be revealed. He has used these activities at high school and university levels.

Description: Learning a language is hard work. Games can help encourage learners to sustain interest and work. Games also provide the language teacher with a context in which the language is useful and meaningful. The speaker will present a rationale for using games in the classroom, offer suggestions for their effective use, and provide examples of different types of language games that those in attendance may fine useful in teir classrooms. The speaker teaches at Tohoku University of Art & Design, and at Johoku High School in Yamagata.

Description: "Americans are so ..." "Japanese people always ..." Have you ever uttered these phrases? In a world full of a vast array of cultures and customs, we sometimes resort to stereotyping to help make sense of different ways of thinking. And although negative stereotypes may be harmful, what about positive stereotypes? "Japanese people are polite." "Americans are friendly." The speaker will explore some of the more common stereotypes held by Japanese anad Americans regarding the other' culture. Topics will include daily rituals, social issues and cultural expectations. Jerry Miller is a lecturer at Yamagata University.

Description: This presentation will discuss the author's experience of raising three all American kids in Japan. He will discuss the affect of becoming bilingual and bicultural as well as his thoughts on the Japanese public education system in general. Finally, he hopes to address what he believes are misconceptions in Japan regarding the self-identity of kids raised in cultures outside of their own nationality.
