Japanese University Students' Stereotypes of Chinese and American Foreigners: A Quantitative Study

Description: The presenters will discuss findings from a study of Japanese stereotypes of foreigners. Two groups listened to the same voice in Japanese. One group believed the speaker was American, the other Chinese. Both groups rated the speaker on 30 items (e.g., intelligence, fluency). Differences in ratings given by both groups and implications for intercultural communication in Japan will be presented.

Description: Given the many uses of video in the classroom, this presentation focuses on following a storyline and character development through the use of key scenes. Daniel Ferreira will demonstrate different techniques that help the students actively engage the visual material. The film Rain Man will be used, as it also creates the opportunity for the class to address socio-cultural issues.

English Blast: A Model English Enrichment Program for Bilingual Children in Japan

Description: English Blast is a cooperative, parent-taught program of enrichment education designed to provide intercultural children with an exciting year-round English learning environment. Low-cost and adaptable, the program can meet the needs of after-schooling groups throughout Japan. This workshop will introduce the English Blast model and methodology. Participants will then work in teams to develop an English Blast teaching unit.

Description: We often hear that Japan is lagging behind the rest of Asia with children's English education, but what is the rest of Asia doing in this regard, especially in bilingual and English-based schools? We'll look at the bilingual movement across Asia, as well as the core of any bilingual curriculum - literacy, and how we teach this to children. Jason Good is an Asia rep for Houghton Mifflin, and was a teacher in Japan. He currently travels around Asia to observe various curriculums used at bilingual and English schools.

Collaborative Learning Through Debates

Description: This session is a hands-on workshop on the language of debates. Chantal Hemmi will show how the language of debates could be practiced using a game that incorporates topics of interest to students. After that, Hemmi will present research results from a small-scale interpretive research project that looked at what the students learned through the debate activity. The students in the research were part of two intermediate classes at Sophia University. The speaker, Chantal Hemmi (EdD TEFL), is a full-time teacher at the British Council and is currently coordinating a new English program for Morimura Gakuen Elementary School.

Phonetic Features of British, American & Indian TV Newscasters' Speech and Responses of Listeners

Description: This study deals with phonetic features of TV newscasters� speech from the BBC, CNN, and Doordarshan (DD) and responses of the Indian students to these newscasts' intelligibility. Responses show that the RP (Received Pronunciation) versus US-style contrast is sharper than the Indian versus Foreign variety contrast. The Yokohama-JALT-meeting audience will be exposed to all three dialects for their input on intelligibility.
About the speaker: Nidumolu Syamala, PhD, is a Phonetics Researcher from Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL) in Hyderabad, India. She also worked as an assistant professor in India for 2 years.

Description: First Tom Anderson presents on classroom-tested ideas for teaching writing skills to large university classes consisting of motivationally-challenged students. Discussion centers on items like seating, grouping, projects activities and grading. Then M. Delano Cannegieter unearths extreme storytelling activities, e.g., interview-based ghost stories, lyric-originated narratives and survey-grounded summarizations. Ideas will be shared on getting students to procure story material from nontraditional sources.

Description: VEN stands for Volunteer Educational Network. The purpose of VEN is to set up sustainable English teacher development programs in economically disadvantaged regions of Southeast Asia. Introducing Self-directed Learning to College Students

Description: Marc Sheffner will describe a three-tiered approach to introducing autonomous language-learning to university English majors. What were the reasons for trying this, how is it implemented, what are some of the difficulties? The presentation will also include the potential of the Internet for web-publishing for students and for communicating with students outside of class.

Raised in France and Britain by his bilingual parents, Marc Sheffner, studied Modern Languages at Oxford University before joining the JET program in 1980. He has taught in Japan at the university level for almost 20 years.
