Introducing Public Elementary School English and the Monkasho Handbook

Description: English instruction is about to become an option for the new "Period for Integrated Studies" in the Japanese public schools. Monkasho has published the Handbook for Elementary School English Teaching Activities, to provide support to teachers. Merner, a member of the authoring committee, will introduce the handbook, share views about the direction public elementary school English seems to be heading, and introduce results of a survey about the current situation in schools which have already implemented English.

A Critical Thinking Approach to the Teaching of Debate and Public Speaking

Description: The purpose of this talk is to suggest ways in which critical thinking may be incorporated into EFL. Specifically, Prof. Matsusaka will report on (a) the debate class which he has recently designed at Waseda University and (b) the training of speech contest participants in which he has been involved as a speech coach to an extracurricular English-language club on campus. Both kinds of work require efforts on the part of the instructor or coach to help students to achieve logical clarity in their communicative activities, and he will describe what might be called a critical thinking approach which he takes when working with his students. On the basis of his experience he will suggest that training EFL learners in logical thinking may be a helpful way to improve a certain aspect of their proficiency.

A Distance Learning Workshop about the TALK Learning System

Description: Mr. Messerklinger, a user of the TALK system, will coordinate with Junge, it's creator, to hold a unique 'distance' session. TALK is a system that helps teachers facilitate students' independent exploration of communication in foreign languages. Participants will receive a package about the system and experiment with it in groups. Junge will field questions from participants via telephone during the break. In the second half, Messerklinger will present Junge's responses and give his own account of using TALK.

Description: In this workshop, the speakers will introduce how to use Scholastic Phonics Workbooks, High Frequency Readers and Hello Readers. All of these books are designed to help your EFL learners develop their reading skills. These carefully graded books are baed on recent theories and research on language acquisition. The presenters will also introduce various supplementary materials and teacher resource books including learning activities and songs which accommodate the specific needs of different types of learners. This presentation promises to be an active, engaging one with ideas that can be adapted for teaching older students as well.

Description: Effective Use of Audio-Visual Materials: In today's communicative-based English language classes, teachers strive to include task-based, student-centered activities to enhance their instructional techniques. A very good way to augment communicative language teaching is to include videos in the classroom to visually demonstrate the language. In this presentation, Prof. Leonard will demonstrate a variety of techniques using videos to get the most out of the language class.

Description: The presenters will demonstrate methods used in a college-level English course for art majors, in which students analyze TV commercials in English and as a final project, create their own commercial. Participants will engage in various task-based activities and view several original student-created commercials from the presenters' classes. In addition, suggestions for methods of creating TV commercials will be explained.
