From the Editor...

Welcome to the fall issue of the LLL SIG newsletter.

This issue begins with a greeting from the SIG coordinator, Eric Skier, in which he reminds us that fall is the season of the JALT National Conference. Details concerning the LLL SIG’s activities at the conference are on the LLL SIG at JALT2008 page. We will co-sponsor (with GALE SIG) a presentation by Neela Griffiths in which she will describe her experiences teaching English to ‘beer girls’ in Cambodia, focusing on the pedagogical approaches used and the impact of the program. There will also be elections of new SIG officers at the annual meeting and we urge members to attend, to vote, and to stand for office.

Also in this issue, Tadashi Ishida continues his Ueno Park series and Yoko Wakui offers a brief outline of the contents of her newly published study guide for older adults who wish to take the TOEIC test. Yoko Wakui, who is also the LLL SIG Membership Chair, has submitted a message to members about our Yahoo Group and email list. Finally, SIG treasurer, Aleda Krause, has submitted a financial report.

I would like to leave you with something to ponder. It has been suggested that the LLL SIG take charge of a special lifelong learning issue of The Language Teacher (tlt). This is a chance to raise the profile of our SIG and to get some publications under our belts. I would like to gauge interest in this idea, so if you would like to write something for the tlt, please contact me at harper.julia.k@gmail.com.

生涯語学学習研究部会(LLL)のニューズレター秋号が発行されました。

秋はJALTにとっても、SIGのメンバーにとってもとても忙しい時期です。JALT大会が開かれるシーズンだからですよ。LLLの大会での活動予定がLLL SIG at JALT2008のページに載っていますから、確認をお忘れなく。おなじみのフォーラムと年次ミーティングに加え、今年はGALE SIG と共にNeela Griffithsのスポンサーになっています。彼女は、カンボジアで「ビール少女」たちに英語を教えた経験について語ってくれます。そこでの話題は、どんな方法で教えたのか、女性の生活にとって言語を学ぶことがどんな影響を持つのかが中心になります。

また今号では、石田さんの上野公園での一風変わった英会話クラスの続報もお楽しみ下さい。和久井さんは、TOEIC受験を目指すシニアの方へ勉強方法を伝授する本を出版されました。その内容が簡単に紹介されています。そして、会員理事である和久井さんからの、LLL会員を対象としたYahooグループとe-mailリストに関する情報があります。彼女は会員同士のコミュニケーションを充実させるために多大なる努力をしてくれています。みなさんのご協力、ご支援をお願いします。最後に、会計のAleda Krauseから財務報告をいただきましたので、目を通してください。

会員のみなさんからのお知恵をお借りしたいことがあります。LLLは、TLT紙面で生涯学習に関する特集を担当する機会を得ました。もしこの機会を生かすことができるなら、LLLの評価も高まり、出版物もできるわけです。みなさんの反応を知りたいと思います。投稿に興味のある方は私までご連絡下さい。harper.julia.k@gmail.com
