Coordinatorfs Message (Spring 2009)
Eric Skier

Well, another year has come and gone, and I am pleased to announce that the LLL SIG remains active in its efforts to spread the word that the teaching of adult and older learners is, in fact, a "special interest."

As with last year, we have been helping organize the Pan-SIG Conference, a conference that is growing and becoming recognized even internationally! The program is going to be a fascinating one, so if you have a chance, please attend. There will be presentations on the teaching of older learners in addition to presentations related to Gender Awareness in Language Education (GALE), Testing and Evaluation (TEVAL), Materials Writers (MW), Other Language Educators (OLE), and two newcomers to the fold: Study Abroad (SA) and Extensive Reading (ER). Oh, and as a special treat, there will be some very impressive Computer-assisted Language Learning (CALL) presentations, as well as one each by the Junior/Senior High (JSHS) SIG and the forming Foreign Language Portfolio (FLP) SIG. The latter is of particular interest to us in the LLL SIG as it also touches on lifelong language learning. Please take a look at the conference homepage (http://pansig.org/2009). While the call for submissions has passed for this yearfs conference, please think about participating in next yearfs conference. It is a special event run by SIGs for SIGs.

Second, as mentioned in the previous newsletter, in September 2010, there will be a special LLL issue of The Language Teacher, and we look forward to receiving submissions from members, whether a research paper, a My Share, or a book review. Need something more on your resume? What could be better than being published in a respectable journal like The Language Teacher. Donft forget the September 2009 deadline is going to be here sooner than later!

Lastly, it may seem a while away, but we should start thinking about JALTfs national conference. It will be held in Shizuoka this year, and, as always, it is a special opportunity for LLL SIG members to meet and share ideas about the teaching of adult and older learners. For more info on the conference, go to: http://jalt.org/conference.

Well, thatfs all from me for now.
