Description: Due to a declining pool of college-aged students, more universities have had to accept lower level students. For teachers this has resulted in more lower-level learners and a wider range of abilities. Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences provides innovative alternatives for this new environment. The theory supports that students have different abilities, and different preferred learning styles. The presenters have found success using "collaborative learning". Group problem solving exercises allow students the opportunity to select different learning roles. As students achieve success with these roles and become comfortable with group tasks, they take on more challenging roles and problems. Four collaborative tasks will be introduced through audience participation. It is hoped that participants will gain practical ideas for teaching.

Description: This is a simple cross-cultural training exercise that is categorized under simulation games. The participants will be divided into two groups: guests (Tanara) and hosting people (whose cultures are more or less the same). The hosting people will become the "culture experts" and ask many questions to find out about the Tanara culture. However, because of their limited English, they can only answer your questions with "yes" and "no." How do you think both groups will manage in this situation? The game will provide the participants insights into human behavior and psychology. After the game, we'll have a debriefing session.

Description: This presentation is aimed at teachers of all levels interested in the communicative approach. The material is specifically for first-year tertiary level students who are false beginners. However, the general concepts can be applied to all levels of EFL learners, from children through to adults. Participants will be able to experience the communicative approach hands-on, as if they were students in a demonstration class. A series of interconnected, student-centered activities will be offered, with the addition of the rationale, concepts and theory behind each activity. These activities will help students to learn: the different expectations of the communicative classroom, the difference between communicative and traditional classrooms, and to assume more responsibility for their own learning. Time for discussion and questions will be provided.

Description: How often do we really listen to our students? We think we know what works in our classes and take much for granted, seldom confirming our instincts with the students themselves. "My Share" will try to rectify this. A panel of students will present aspects of their language learning experiences. These will include an overview of methods that they feel are effective. Afterwards, a panel of teachers will discuss the same issues. A moderated discussion will follow and any other attendees who would like to contribute their (brief) "My Share" would be very welcome. We hope that sharing ideas will help us be more reflective in the classroom.
