Using the Oxford Reading Tree

"Conceptual Metaphors" and Figurative Language in the EFL Classroom

Description: Native English speakers use an average of 4 metaphoric expressions per minute of natural conversation, yet figurative language is generally overlooked by EFL textbooks. This workshop will look at what George Lakoff and Mark Johnson call conceptual metaphors and how they influence language(s). Crosscultural metaphors will be considered, and participants will discuss how these conceptual metaphors can be used in the EFL classroom to help our students understand figurative language.

ESP English for Special Purposes: Adapting an American High School Science Textbook for the ESL/EFL Classroom

Description: Professor Stephen Shucart will explore how to use an American science textbook in a university-level English class. He used the Active Reading series of textbooks by Neal Anderson as a basis for the adaptation. He first gives a detailed explanation the Active Reading methodology, then shows how it can be used to generate various exercises for a General English course. He also explains how each class is organized. The talk will be illustrated with handouts of examples from the textbook, and samples of the activities he created based on the Active Reading methodology.
Stephen Shucart is an Associate Professor at Akita Prefectural University, Honjo Campus, where he runs a 70 iMac CALL lab. He is a past Telecommunications chair for the JALT CALL SIG and currently the Publicity Chair for the Akita JALT Chapter.

Description: The presenter will share her reflections on teaching language and educating language teachers in online/onsite environments. While teaching a totally online course is still a bit unusual, designing a hybrid course, using online features in a traditional classroom, has interesting possibilities. The presenter will explore the issues (both challenges and advantages) and good practices of online/onsite language education. There will be time for questions and discussion.

Description: This workshop presents a combination of techniques for addressing ESL students' basic needs in pronunciation while engaging them as whole learners. The audience will participate in demonstrations for introducing stress, rhythm, and intonation to multilevel classes. This session introduces warm-up routines to be used prior to work on minimal pairs in a pronunciation or oral communication course. The drills are based on the assumption that learners need physical awareness and control over their vocal apparatus before drills on segmental phonemes can lead to lasting improvement in English pronunciation.

Learning Styles in the Classroom: Yours and the Students

Description: Learning happens all the time and in many different settings. While we are always learning, we do not all learn the same way. In this presentation we will explore the idea of the learning cycle and learning styles. Everyone attending the presentation will be given a copy of the "Learning Style Inventory". Developed by David A. Kolb, Ph.D., the LSI is a simple questionnaire that allows you to identify your preferred way of learning new information. In addition to interpreting your own scores on the LSI, a discussion will follow where you will learn practical ways to adapt your teaching to the learning cycle and to students with different learning styles.

Description: In daily life, we listen twice as much as we speak and four times as much as we write. Unfortunately, as important as this skill is, Japanese students are rarely trained beyond the simple level of listening for specific information. Karl will open with some ice-breaking activities followed by an overview of the listening process. He will then move on to sampling a few listening activities and exercises designed to give learners tactics for listening that will encourage them to become better thinkers and thus better language learners.
