Description: When you were a child, you had the pleasure of discovering the criteria necessary to speak your mother tongue. I want you to experience this process again through learning English articles. The criteria for English articles are the images one uses to decide how to express your intention: a, the or no article. Because these criteria are images, it is almost impossible to explain them in words. Please pay careful attention to the situations we make at the workshop and discover these criteria for yourself.

One Person / One Language
Raising Bilingual Children

Description: One person/one language is a theory that was developed about 70 years ago and it goes like this: if two parents with different native languages speak only their native language to the child from birth, then the child will learn both languages and learn to distinguish between the languages more quickly and effectively than by any other methods. This method has generally been supported by research over the years, however, many people now believe that it isn't necessary to be fluent in the second language to qualify as bilingual. Therefore, following a method as strict as one person/one language (which does not allow for language mixing - ie. "I feel really genki today!") is not as appealing as it used to be.Andy will talk about the results of his own research and the reasons why people mix languages even though they feel it is not best to do so.

Bilingualism and Bunko

Description: The presentation will be on bunko, and their effectiveness as a site for bilingual development. Bunko are bilingual groups whose members are returnees, expatriate children and the offspring of international marriages. The core of a bunko is its book collection, and its members meet regularly to share books and enjoy linguistic activities in an informal setting; the aim being to help children keep up their other language. Frances will describe its successes and failures in maintaining its members' English language skills. Then the potential of bunko to contribute to bilingual development will be examined. This also entails thinking about early bilingual education and lifelong education (the bunko facilitators are volunteer adults and/or parents).

Description: This month's workshop has no invited speaker. Instead, please come along and share your favourite activities! Each should last a maximum of 15 minutes. It doesn't matter what age group you teach. Please demonstrate the activity so that others can use it. If you have worksheets or materials for your activity, then please bring enough so that everyone can join in. If you just want to come and listen then that's fine, too.

Description: Most textbooks, far from being global, present a very limited picture of the world. The presenter will provide global issues teaching materials that include countries and situations generally ignored: street children in Brazil, factory slaves in Pakistan, etc. Methods for teaching these difficult topics to high school and low level university students include a unique adaptation of dictogloss, shadow talking, and summarizing. These exercises come from the presenter\'s non-profit, self-published text.
