Movement can be perceived in our way of thinking, in the fluctuations of our feelings, seen in our interactions with other people and most clearly in the movement of our physical body. Children who have a good control over their 5 senses are better able to express their feelings through movements, and do not appear to be overwhelmed by large inputs of knowledge and information. Also, children who lack co-ordination skills have been seen to experience difficulties with speaking, reading, and writing. In this presentation we will show you a number of activities that use movement and rhythm to show you a whole body approach to teaching and using English which will enhance your student's concentration, increase their confidence and balance control as well as enhance their emotional and physical growth.

How to cultivate your skill to make a bond with your students

Speaker: Kyoko Sonomoto, Kagoshima Junshin Junior High School

Fee (JALT members): free
Fee (One-Day members): 1,000 yen
Prefecture: Kagoshima
City: Kagoshima
Venue: Seminar Room 117, Ground Floor Kousha Biru, Shinyashiki opposite the Shinyashiki Tram Stop
Description: All the teachers in English education always want their students to know that English is fun and to understand what they are learning. However, don't you sometimes get frustrated when you feel you cannot convey your enthusiasm to your students?

Through my 24-year-experience as an English teacher, I came to realize that the first step for successful teaching was making a heartful bond between a teacher and her/his students before he/she actually starts teaching. Then I began to learn Parents Effectiveness Training and Teachers Effectiveness Training created by Dr. Thomas Gordon, an American-licensed psychologist, and I actually feel the benefit of them now.

While it is important for a teacher to understand his/her students, it is equally important for students to understand their teacher. I will introduce some concrete ways (how to listen/ how to convey) in the session.

Please note: THIS PRESENTATION WILL BE IN JAPANESE, some assistance will be given to non-Japanese speakers if required.

A working knowledge of the phonology of natural connected speech, elisions and liaisons, weak forms and reductions helps students with their 'bottom-up' decoding skills. Developing student knowledge of discourse, particularly of scripts (those discourses in English that tend to follow a set pattern) helps them with their 'top-down' predictive skills.

Part 2 Teaching the Strategies of Speaking: Helping Students with

Prefecture: Kagoshima
City: Kagoshima

Description: All of us use strategies when we speak. We use strategies to confirm or clarify what we're saying and what we're hearing, to show interest, to maintain and develop conversations and to help with fluency. This talk introduces a new speaking and listening text, Communication Spotlight, that in addition to giving students practice in talking and helping them with the means to do so, helps students be aware of and learn to use these different communication strategies.
