Activities for Upper Grade Kids in Elementary School English

Description: The main goal of English Activities in Elementary School is to develop the children's positive attitude to try and communicate with others.

There are various efforts in trying to develop activities and lessons to realize this goal. However, it is often very difficult to design activities to draw the attention and interest from the upper grade children in elementary school. In this workshop, the presenter will introduce activities that have been designed based on topics and themes that interest such upper grade children and collected in the Junior Columbus 21 series (Mitsumura Tosho). In the latter half of the workshop, participants will be asked to work in groups and actually conduct such activities.

About the speaker: Tom Merner has taught English to students of various age groups in Japan for over 20 years. Currently lecturer at Reitaku University and part-time English instructor at Showa Women's University attached Showa Elementary School and Showa Junior High School. He is a member of program production committee for NHK "Super Eigorian" and "Eigorian 3". Tom is a co-author of the Junior Columbus 21 series (Mitsumura Tosho). He also conducts teacher training for Elementary School English Activities for various cities and schools across Japan.

Description: Using poetry in the language classroom: whys and hows

In this presentation I will begin with a brief exploration of reasons why we might use poetry in language classrooms. I will devote most our time together to a demonstration of ways I've used poems in my classes in discussion with participants. I will also share a list of poetry resources on the web, along with a brief discussion of how an arts education perspective on language may help teachers and learners become more autonomous members of their shared learning communities.

Pragmatics in a Film Corpus

Description: It is generally believed that in EFL contexts like we have in Japan, film or video is a significant source of input for our learners. But how valid are our assumptions? Hasna??t there been a generally uncritical acceptance of these assumptions? What has been missing, however, are studies to see in what ways film and media materials faithfully reflect the ordinary language used in natural conversations in the a??real worlda?? and in what ways they might deviate,-if ever so slightly. This presentation will summarize some of the initial findings of a 4-year project to assemble and analyze a teacher-selected film dialogue corpus, Audience members will later participate in a variety of activities designed for classroom use by John Rylander. As part of the example lesson, audience members will be taught using a combination of video-based examples of speech acts taken from various media sources and edited for instructional purposes and a set of guided discovery worksheets to stimulate pair/group discussion and focus learner attention on the 1) pragmalinguistic forms realized within the clips, and 2) sociopragmatic elements relevant to the setting. Throughout the presentation audience members are welcome to raise questions and offer comments on any aspect of the instruction and materials.

Description: At my high school, we do a drama competition every year. All the students write, practice and perform in their own play. Before we can do any of this we need to prepare. So what do we need to do? As a teacher I need to give the students motivation. To write, to practice. Easier said than done. But there are activities that focus the students and get them to do their best. They aren't my ideas; they've been developed and refined by teachers over years and years of doing these kinds of activities, but I will share what I had learned,and hopefully you'll be able to use these activities and methods to get your students to do their best with drama.

Description: Experience how to make good use of authentic picture books with young EFL learners.

Stories help children become aware of the general ?efeel?f and sound of the foreign language. Stories also introduce children to language items and sentence constructions without their necessarily having to use them productively. (Andrew Wright, 2001). Giving young learners an opportunity to this language awareness experience is essential for later foreign language learning. Understanding how children acquire a foreign language from the point of child growth and learning process, the presenters will introduce how picture books can be a good source of language learning. Many easy but meaningful and practical activities that will deepen their understanding and that are FUN will be introduced through pre-reading, while-reading, and post-reading activities.

Description: In this presentation author and teacher, Patricia Daly Oe, will discuss the value of using picture books and storytelling in the learning environment for children from the pre-school to early elementary age groups. Following on from this, she will show practical examples of how to use picture books and storytelling techniques in small and large classes and for a range of linguistic levels. Themes covered will include: using stories for vocabulary development, creative activities inspired by picture books, rhythm and rhyme, making your own picture stories (students and teachers), famous Japanese stories in English and using stories for special events such as Halloween, Christmas or school performances. Description: Games play a key role in the learning process of human beings. A lot of what we have learned about the world, we have learned through games. In children's classes, games are an important source of motivation. They motivate children to do well, to feel good about themselves, and to bond with others. They are a source of new language, and they provide a context for use of language already learned.

However, in the monolingual EFL class, playing games can be problematic. A game is often a signal to switch back into L1 mode for communication?or even to use no language at all. Games must be well designed to encourage children to communicate in English?not just name vocabulary items or complete tasks given on cards.

Games that require special boards, dice, or other equipment are also sometimes difficult to implement. Large boards are difficult to carry around from classroom to classroom or school to school; dice, etc. can be difficult to find or use; storage space may be limited. Card games are simple to make and carry around, and take little room to store.

In this workshop demonstration, participants will learn about and have a chance to play some card games developed for maximum use of English, including Crazy Matches, Challenge, No Way, and Please. All are patterned on games already familiar to many children, but use teacher-created decks of cards. They are easy to learn and can be adapted for use at many different levels and in many different content areas.

Tips will also be given on developing new decks of cards, sources for reproducible pictures to be used on the cards, and ways to produce cards effectively and inexpensively.

Description: Cognitive development and language development in young children go hand-in-hand. When learning a second language, motivation for communication is learned by children in the most meaningful context. Content-based language education can provide a strong cognitive base for language development. English immersion education programs around Japan are teaching English to children through content that is both important and interesting to their lives.

The presenter will discuss what is involved for teachers take when planning for immersion education, as well as introducing some activities that have proven to be favorites in the immersion classroom. Participants are encouraged to generate discussion on immersion education and content-based language learning through the workshop.

Description: The Cambridge Young Learners English Tests (YLE) were first introduced ten years ago after extensive trialling in many parts of the world and are now taken by over 310,000 children in over 65 countries and territories worldwide. The tests are available at three levels, Starters, Movers and Flyers, and are designed for children aged 7-13. The emphasis in the Cambridge YLE tests is on speaking and listening skills, the abilities that children develop first, and since children relate to the world quite differently from adults, topic areas have been chosen which are relevant to children�fs lives ? such as school, family, food, sports and animals. This presentation provides an introduction for teachers and parents to the YLE tests, including the background to the development of the tests, an introduction to the three levels of the tests, and a review of the skills that are tested.
