Philosophy of Teaching Difficult Students

Speaker: Curtis Kelly, Heian Women's University
Time: 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM (Fri., April 13th, 2001)
Fee (JALT members): free
Fee (One-Day members): 1,000 yen
Prefecture: Kyoto
City: Kyoto
Venue: Kyoto Kyoiku Bunka Center
Description: College EFL classes, dubbed "the wasteland of motivation," bring us into contact with students who are bored, indifferent, and even hostile. While there is no simple solution for dealing with such students, the problem is so central to the success of our teaching, that we must attempt to find one. The presenter has taught English in Japan for over twenty years, and is working on a doctorate in learner development. He has found that many of the problems of difficult students come from unresolved needs, developmental stages, relational learning styles in an analytical classroom, or what Palmer calls the "wall of fear" (1998). The presenter will relate these concepts to his own classroom experiences and discuss techniques for building relationships with difficult students and raising esteem. In particular, he will discuss Roger's three criteria for the humanistic approach: 1) authenticity, empathic listening, and 3) absolute positive regard. Finally, the participants will be asked to offer their experiences and suggestions for dealing with difficult students.

Venue: Kyoto Kyoiku Bunka Center
Description: Learner self evaluation video (LSEV) is an effective tool in building conversational fluency (Murphy, 1997; Murphy and Kenny, 1998).In large weekly classes of 40 students, it is difficult to use LSEV. Wanner (1999) extended LSEV to group discussions, group learner self evaluation video (GLSEV), where two or more students discuss. Students follow guidelines similar to CHILDES (MacWhinney, 1995) to transcribe data. These guidelines, as well as necessary equipment, facilities, and class size applications, are discussed.

Implementing an Oral Proficiency Testing Program at Your School

Speaker: Dean Williams
Time: 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM (Sat., December 15th, 2001)
Fee (JALT members): free
Fee (One-Day members): 1,000 yen
Prefecture: Kyoto
City: Kyoto
Venue: Kyoto Kyoiku Bunka Center, 4-13 Kawahara-cho Shogo-in Sakyo -ku, Kyoto-shi
Description: The exigencies of curricula, teaching schedules, and day-to-day institutional realities often constrain our ability to offer our students a balanced communicative program. Even innovative and energetic instruction can suffer from a lack of meaningful language "events" that rise above the level of practice, review, or pencil-and-paper tests. One interesting possibility is to establish a regular, formal oral testing regime. If properly carried out, such a program can provide the students with a chance to show what they have learned in a context that more accurately simulates what language students have to face in the real world.
Following the presentation, participants are invited to a Christmas Party.
