Coaching Success in the Classroom

Description: In this presentation, Coach Jimmy Yagi, a former US collegiate basketball coach and advisor to many European basketball teams will speak on the parallels that coaching and language teaching share. Beneficial to participants will be the discussion on creative approaches used to motivate learning on the basketball court which could be successfully applied to the classroom, the relevance of stressing fundamentals, getting student's attention, and building credibility and trust. In addition, the presenter will introduce unorthodox coaching methods that can sometimes bring surprising results. Based on more than 30 years of coaching experience in the U.S., Asia, and Europe, Coach Yagi will introduce numerous coaching techniques that teachers could consider applying to their language-teaching classroom.
Bio-data:
Jimmy Yagi was the University of Hawaii-Hilo basketball team for 18 years. After retiring from active coaching, Coach Yagi was contracted by Adidas International to conduct clinics in Europe, Asia and seemingly everywhere in between. He was recently listed as one of the top twenty influential sports figures in Hawaii.

Description: Discussions of teaching usually involve judgments. During the workshop, we will develop ways to look at our teaching practices in non-judgmental ways by analyzing transcribed exchanges from tape recordings of classes. As we analyze the transcripts, we will learn new ways to discuss our teaching practices and new ways to generate alternative practices. In medicine, literature, and many other professions, analysis of data is the norm rather than judgments about practices. (Participants who bring a page of transcriptions from one of their classes will be given a small token of appreciation.)

Description: With the availability of affordable software programs and digital equipment, educators can now create high quality audio and visual recordings to enhance their classroom lessons. The presenter will give an overview of the types of software programs and equipment used to turn written short stories into stimulating multimedia language skills activities for use in the computer or conventional classroom.
About the speaker: Rex Tanimoto has written two storytelling textbooks: The Storyteller (Macmillan LanguageHouse) and Uncle Rex's Storytelling Time (Osaka Kyoiku Tosho). He has also published an interactive CD-ROM, titled Digi Tales I, in association with Osaka Gakuin University's Digital Education Center.
