Description: Presentation 1 will demonstrate how, after getting to grips with the meaning of a song, young learners do various activities to read the form. Step-by-step, they work together to build up to reading the content words in the lyrics. Presentation 2 will explore how cartoons can be used successfully with young learners to develop their critical thinking skills, encourage creativity and develop an awareness of global issues. Participants will leave with an activity that they can adapt to fit a variety of levels.

Description: Unlike most teacher training programs, Kids' Pier offers on the job training through team-teaching and observing experienced teachers' lessons. For children, Kids' Pier is an anchorage, a place to promote positive attitudes toward learning and to raise self-esteem using English as a tool. In this presentation, the presenters will share the whole picture of Kids' Pier program.

Description: In many countries, globalization has led to the introduction of foreign language learning by young children. In Japan, the teaching of English in elementary schools was implemented in 2002. I will talk about the main problems in early foreign language education here. Participants will be encouraged to discuss such issues as: who should teach; primary-secondary continuation; staging of skills and the relationship between oral/aural and written aspects of the language; motivation and the number of languages children could learn.

Description: Research reveals that timely Japanese support increases learner participation and motivation. Let "Encounters Abroad" provide that support as students learn travel English for use abroad and on the job in Japan. Participants will examine the role of L1 support, leaving with a list of L1 "do's" and "don'ts" that will increase English talk time, and improve student motivation and attitude toward English.
