Language Games in the Communicative Classroom

A number of games that have proved beneficial in teaching university classes will be demonstrated and discussed in terms of associated learning purposes. Teachers can develop similar activities to match a range of classroom situations and learning objectives.

DramaWorks: Drama Techniques for Teaching EFL

Description: Mr. Warfield of DramaWorks will lead a presentation using a new method for teaching EFL using drama techniques. This method has been used successfully in secondary and higher education. DramaWorks texts are stories told in 20 scenes of dialogue and are designed to be acted out. The materials are easy and fun to use and do not require any drama experience, props or special acting ability. The textbooks include warm-ups, language activities and teacher's notes. This will be a workshop-style, participatory presentation.

Description: Five local teachers will present successful classroom activities. Gary Baird, who works at various elementary schools in Imabari, will describe some techniques and activities that can be used in the elementary school classroom to facilitate effective language acquisition. Makiko Kanno, a Japanese language instructor at the International Student Center at Ehime University, will show that by using a lot of realia and pictures, it is easy and effective to conduct a class in the target language only, even for beginners. Matthew Vatta from Ehime University will introduce a vocabulary-building activity for pre-intermediate learners about the smells, sights and tastes of food through hands-on samples. Masaki Nogami from Seiryo High School will present some suggestions for lessons for high school students, including activities on slash-reading and shadow-reading. And Tamara Milbourn from Matsuyama University will explain how she uses collages to encourage her pre-intermediate students to practice using different conversation strategies.

Mr. Seike is the director of e-SCHOOL, a local English school in Matsuyama, and he will explain its unique approach to installing the system in elementary schools and different types of private schools.

Description: Despite its importance, vocabulary is sometimes glossed over, especially by textbook designers. This presentation will focus on ways that teachers can incorporate vocabulary into their teaching and testing. In particular, Mr. Paterson will suggest criteria for selecting vocabulary, discuss the importance of recycling due to the influence of forgetting, and give a brief summary of psycholinguistic models of vocabulary acquisition.

Description: Communicative Language Teaching theory holds that negotiating meaning is a key element in learning a foreign language. However, the ability to negotiate meaning is dependent upon one's ability to use communicative strategies effectively. Communicative strategies are strategies employed when people encounter a communication problem during conversation. This presentation will review what communicative strategies are, and the function they serve in achieving meaning.
