Extensive reading programs claim to do just that. Murphy will review the claims of extensive reading proponents, and skeptics. He will also present lesson ideas, and results of a study of extensive reading classes at Ehime University.

Description: Learners' language development through debate tasks observed in a high school English classroom is closely examined. The chaotic period, in which learners push themselves to paraphrase and improvise their speech taking a risk of increasing language deficiency, was seen during a debate task. This presentation explores crucial factors to push learners to make maximum use of their target language.

Description: Second language learners need certain linguistic background knowledge and a number of foundation language skills before they can embark on the study of critical thinking. In this presentation Lawrie Hunter explains the structured content and graphical activity based materials that he has developed for foundation critical thinking at Kochi University of Technology. Participants will come away with a set of thinking tools for their own teaching and materials writing.
Lawrie Hunter has taught mathematics and English in Canada, Australia, Papua New Guinea and Japan, and has been directing the critical thinking and academic writing programs at Kochi University of Technology since it opened in 1997. He is co-author of Critical Thinking and author of Thinking in English.

Description: Intercultural competence (ICC) is needed to transcend onefs native language-culture to interact effectively and appropriately with people of other backgrounds. In this presentation, language teachers explore its multiple dimensions -- definitions, traits, components, levels, and the role of language proficiency for intercultural success. The importance of developing ICC in our students is also considered as an important aspect of the foreign language experience.
