Applying the Uniqueness Principle in Language Classrooms: Tools & Tasks

Description: Research shows that learners often misunderstand or resist multiple functions for single forms (such as present and future meanings of the present continuous). This is called the Uniqueness Principle (UP). The presenter will explain UP with examples from research and classroom data, arguing that understanding UP benefits teachers in several ways. He will then demonstrate awareness-raising activities (embedded within larger tasks) which reveal different functions or meanings created by single forms, thus confirming or contradicting students' initial understandings.

Using Multi-Media in a Classroom Setting

Description: Malcolm Swanson will start by showing what teachers could be doing with digital video in their classes with a minimal outlay of funds and equipment. In his 30 minute slot, he'll demonstrate how easy it is to produce professional looking results on video, followed by a discussion on using these technologies in your classrooms.
Nigel Stott will be demonstrating some multimedia software made using Macromedia's Director. As well as showing some of the CALL materials he has developed, he will also explain how such materials can be used with large university classes in a way that allows the teacher to focus on interaction with individuals and small groups.
Paul Collett will discuss creating accessible and usable web sites for students, focussing on wireless content-based sites students can access through portable devices, particularly cell phones. He will look at some of the problems involved here, and demonstrate some simple but useful web pages adaptable to a variety of situations.
All three presenters teach at colleges and universities in the Kitakyushu areas and are active members of the local JALT chapter.

Description: A beach BBQ with "enlightenment." The MiyaJALT Executive Board will be there to informally discuss the recent developments of JALT, the proposed restructuring plan, and the future plans of the chapter. Please bring barbecue fare to share and whatever equipment and utensils you require. Rain date: September 15.

Incorporating Projects (and lots of other things) into English Classes

Description: Tomei discusses ways he incorporates projects and other longer-term work into his oral communication class. He will share lots of materials and ideas. Tomei will also explain how Japanese teachers of English can use these materials as a basis for Japanese teachers to move to mostly English classes. As well as project ideas, Tomei talks about:

classroom management,
exercise types, and
music in the classroom.

Concrete examples of these are provided.
