Description: Oxford University Press (OUP) will bring Steven Donald (Nagasaki Junshin University) to talk about reading instruction in English education. There will be local presenters' speeches as well: Steve Davies will speak about reading instruction at Miyazaki International College; Hugh Nicoll, extensive reading at Miyazaki Municipal University (MMU); and Scott Bingham, intensive reading at MMU. Graded readers published by OUP and ideas on how to make use of them will be shared. We hope this meeting can provide you with useful information you can apply in your English language teaching.

Description: This presentation will demonstrate the integrated use of the communicative approach with grammar instruction. The presenter will also show from both cognitive and sociolinguistic perspectives that the use of Japanese and grammar teaching are not detrimental to improving learners' communicative competence and will make suggestions as to how to utilize both English and Japanese in the classroom.

He will then use the same images again to lead the workshop participants through a variety of student-centered group activities that emphasize oral production.

Description: This workshop is aimed at teachers, teacher educators and curriculum developers who are interested in content, text or genre-based material preparation and programming. A wide range of language proficiency levels in a first-year political science class necessitated the rewriting of the course syllabus to be learner-centered. Sample materials written as the language component of the class will be demonstrated as a model. Time allowing, participants will be given the opportunity to adapt authentic texts and create learner-centered activities appropriate to their own teaching contexts.

Description: First, the presenter will discuss ten recent findings from brain studies that illuminate how children learn languages. The theories will include the Critical Age Hypothesis, Multisensory Input, Deep Processing, Noticing, and Ahn's Model of Bilingual Acquisition. Second, the participants will be put into groups, and asked to design an English teaching activity that accommodates one or more of these theories.
