Wonder Kids - Drama Activities for Young Children

Description: For Nagasaki JALT's first meeting of 2004, we welcome back Kristie Collins of DramaWorks Group and Josai International University, for perhaps her last appearance in Nagasaki before she returns to Canada! DramaWorks' Wonder Kids is an innovative new kids' program that makes both learning and teaching, easy and fun. Wonder Kids is designed for use in grades 4 through 6, and it introduces authentic language and characters in a fun-filled story, told in 20 scenes.
This workshop-style presentation will show participants how to block the scenes, and introduce language activities and warm-up games that reinforce language functions, vocabulary and natural intonation. No props, stage or acting experience necessary!

Learning through Images and Actions

Description: Paul Shimizu has been teaching and developing educational materials for more than 30 years, 15 of them in Japan, and is the co-author of Marathon Mouth and Marathon Mouth Plus (Intercom Press). His students have ranged from kindergarten to university and beyond.
The presenter will take the participants through a variety of activities which elicit immediate non-verbal response from the students (OPR-Only Physical Response). These activities do not only require imperative language. He will then, using the same images, take us through a variety of student-centered group activities with the emphasis on verbal production, using only images and actions. There will be no reading. The focus of the presentation is response before production. All welcome!

Mind maps: Meaning and Form

Description: Mind maps are pictures of language organized in ways which enhance creative thinking and memorization. This presentation will demonstrate practical and easy ways to create an effective Mind map by hand by following the Mind map rules, which the presenter has adapted from The Mindmap Book, by Toni Buzan. Activities that will develop Mind mapping skills and (English) language skills in interactive and learner-centered ways will be introduced to participants. Ways in which methodology and activities can be adapted to a variety of teaching contexts will be discussed. The presenter will use PowerPoint, and handouts of activities will be available.

An English Nagasaki Reader - John Ford / Return to Nagasaki

Description: Nagasaki JALT's special guest presenter is a noted local teacher, translator, and writer, among his many other talents. For his first session with us in almost five years, Burke-Gaffney will discuss the general beginnings of English education, before asking us to work in groups with samples from the Crossroads journal, and with his more recent reader specially designed for Nagasaki English studies. Participants will receive free sample inspection copies. In the second session, Allan will use a CBC Canada video made with Burke-Gaffney's assistance about a Canadian POW's return to Nagasaki to show some ways to use it in a peace studies-related college class. Please note that for this month only the meeting location has been changed from the usual site.

Super Eigorian for Elementary School English

Description: Following the popular TV series Eigorian, NHK produced a new series called Super Eigorian aimed for 5th and 6th graders for use in English activities in elementary schools. Based on a thematic- and activity-based approach, the program was designed to assist teachers conduct English activities for an age group often considered difficult to teach. Our special guest in September will come from Yokohama to talk about and demonstrate some activities from this, as well as introducing a new textbook currently being developed for elementary school English lessons within a content-based curriculum.

The Psychology of Difficult Students

Description: Every teacher must face some students who are bored, indifferent, or even hostile. While there are no simple solutions for dealing with such students, Curtis Kelly examines four theories in psychology related to motivation, moral development, and psychological development that provide fascinating insights. Kelly is a professor at Osaka Gakuin University, and is the author of Significant Scribbles and Writing from Within. This session is part of a pan-Kyushu Four Corners JALT tour, and is planned as Nagasaki JALT's seventh and final meeting of 2004.
