Addressing Individual Differences through Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences

Description: Addressing individual differences in the second language classroom is an important factor in lesson planning. Howard Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligences may serve as a way to address these differences. The workshop will begin with a description of Gardner's theory. The relevance of his theory to educators will be discussed as well as ways by which students may be assessed using a survey type questionnaire. The workshop will conclude with a description of a variety of language teaching activities which may be used to address individual differences in the second language classroom based on Gardner's theory. Nagasaki JALT's first meeting for 2005 will be during the annual Lantern Festival - all welcome!

Description: April brings the beginning of spring, as well as the start of classes for many people. This month, we will have a spring party at or near Dejima Wharf. The purpose is threefold: first, to enable our growing membership and new executive to get to know each other; second, to brainstorm any desired meeting ideas for the rest of the year; and third, to share any ideas for our first classes, from the perspectives of teachers or learners. All welcome, and no admission charges for attending, but other costs will be shared. If you are interested in attending, please contact us by April 3 in order that we can determine the approximate number of participants.

Computer-Based Writing Classes

Description: Pellowe describes his computer-based writing course, and gives practical advice on how teachers can implement similar courses with their own students. Pellowe's students do pre-writing tasks, solicit and share opinions, and respond to and discuss each other's writing. He discusses the effects on students' writing (both the processes and products) and some solutions to challenges faced with such a course.

Significant Scribbles: From sentence combining to diary writing.

Description: Sentence combining has been around since the 1960s, but it has been largely overlooked, despite research showing its effectiveness. Recent findings in brain studies, however, suggest that we have grossly underestimated the power of this unusual technique for teaching grammar and writing. The presenter will explain what sentence combining is, discuss some of the research that shows its unique advantages, and demonstrate a grammar/writing course that incorporates this methodology. The participants will engage in discussions on how we can employ new insights on learning, and how to attend to both the linguistic and psychological needs of learners.

Description: Covenant Players is an International Theater and Communications Organization, who last visited here in 1999 with a drama in the classroom session. This time, their workshop will focus on some of the basics that they see as being important to good and clear communication.This would encompass a fun learning time through experience, but also equipping teachers with exercises and ideas that they would be able to take back to their classroom. Participants should come prepared to be involved and have a good time.

Description: For our seventh and last meeting of the year, we welcome back two popular material writers and presenters. After presenting twice at this fall's JALT Conference in Shizuoka, they will share how they teach both language and culture in a content-based class teaching self-awareness, knowledge of culture-general elements, and various intercultural communication skills.

Attendees will engage in many enjoyable activities that teach both language and cultural content, and will leave with many numerous ideas for their own conversation, reading, listening, and writing classes.
