Description: This presentation will focus on the need for students to make use of the English they know in the here-and-now. In particular, it will show how the ELT material "Communicate Now" makes explicit use of communication strategies which rapidly improve the students' ability to use language. It will also show that classroom instructions can be phrased simply, briefly and clearly so that the language is no more intimidating than the task itself. There will be a practical demonstration of ways to get the best out of the book, which those attending should be able to apply to their own teaching environments. A representative from Pearson/Longman will also attend to distribute and explain materials. There is no admission charge this month, and all welcome!

Description: With over 20 years of English teaching experience in Japan, Helene Jarmol Uchida is a believer in the natural ability of children to absorb English. Activities and games that initiate and motivate students to take the great leap and interact with their peers in English are the theme of Uchida's presentation. Uchida will share methods, activities and games which plant the seeds of confidence in young learners, enabling and empowering them to have control over their own English. Uchida believes English education in Japan should be more experiential. All welcome!

All of the activities demonstrated today could be done by teachers who do not have video iPods, but the presenter claims that video iPods are affordable alternatives to other technologies such as laptop computers. Description: For our eighth meeting of the year, we are lucky to have four great local presenters from the JET Programme, who will offer some original ideas to use in your classes. Tired of the same fruit basket and "karuta" games? Younger learners can be a tough crowd to teach, especially with larger classes of mixed levels and motivations. Tony Kazanjian (Sonogi) will give us some great ideas to get Japanese kids speaking and playing in English. Meanwhile, Tom Sorensen (Sonogi), Emilie Masson (Hasami) and Chris Colucci (Hasami) will offer some creative ideas on how to engage older learners - ranging from junior and senior high school students to adult learners - to speak more freely in class. Teachers and learners of all kinds are very welcome!

Description: Part of the challenge of being an English teacher is making the language more accessible and familiar for our students. This presentation will suggest that it might actually be worth making it stranger sometimes! Artists and writers often use the technique of defamiliarization to shake up our perceptions of the everyday world that we sometimes ignore. This workshop will look at practical ways in which a similar approach can do the same for language learners, helping students to read more actively, and write more creatively. Also, a local teacher, translator and writer will introduce her new ELT text, to be published by Kaibunsha in 2007. All welcome for our ninth meeting of the year!
