Reasons behind the use of such activities and why they work will be dealt with briefly. Then the session will turn to thinking of ways to turn the 'ordinary lesson' into something more exciting and engaging for students. A "My Share" exchange of lesson ideas will follow the presentation.
Speaker: Tom Pendergast, International Buddhist University

Fee (One-Day members): free this month
Prefecture: Nara
City: Nara
Venue: English Masters - Communication Center (KM Building 2F, North of Gakuenmae Station on the Kintetsu Nara Line)
Description: A good way to find out about a language-learning method is to do it in a new language. That's what we'll do at the Nara JALT meeting in August. "TAPL" stands for teacher-assisted pair learning. It is a variation of SAPL (self-access pair learning). TAPL/SAPL can be used for learning English, French, Italian, German, and/or Spanish ... and more easily with each new language.
Light meal/drinks after the workshop.
About the speaker: Tom Pendergast is a well-known and respected figure in ELT. He also happens to be one of the original founders of KALT, which later became JALT, and was the association's first president.
Speaker: Clive Lovelock, Tezukayama Gakuin University

Description: The Japanese high school Juken Eigo exam-oriented study system, based on grammar-translation and memorization, trains high school students in classroom behaviour which is antithetical to language learning, according to presenter Clive Lovelock, whose workshop demonstrates a system of using individual student assessment cards to make students aware of things they need to do to learn English. This system provides students with constant reminders to use them. Clive Lovelock is Professor of ELT at Tezukayama Gakuin University's Osaka Sayama Campus. He has a Post-graduate Diploma in TEFL from London University, and an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from Essex University (both UK). He has taught EFL and ESL in various countries and in Japan for nearly 30 years.
