Academic Research Writing

Description: Have you ever taught students to write a research paper in English? This presentation will show you how! We will begin with some basic background information about Southern Illinois University in Niigata's Intensive English Program. Then, we will discuss the steps we go through in preparing to write, writing the paper, and presenting the research in a final presentation. Some sample materials used in teaching this course, as well as some sample student papers, will be available for your review. We are looking forward to seeing you there! Please note: If you'd like to join our speaker for lunch before the presentation please meet at the Friendship Centre at 11:30.
About the speaker: The speaker, Cyndi Peterson, is Director of the Intensive English Program at Southern Illinois University in Niigata.

Description: Part 1: The new school year is upon us. Are you ready? Do you want to liven up your classroom with fun games and warm-ups that your students will love? The activities demonstrated can be used in junior high, high school, university, and adult classrooms. You will walk away with minimal preparation activities that can be put to use immediately in your own classes. Come and participate, learn and maybe even share one of your own ideas!
Part 2: The My Share portion will feature short presentations by Azusa Kibushi, Cyndi Peterson, Kazushige Cho, and Lori Haga. The topics will include first-day mixers and games such as "Human Bingo," "Introduction Game for a Large Class," a "Hi, how are you?" game for kids, and activities from a student's point-of-view. There is still room for more presenters;if you are interested in presenting, please contact Angela or Mark.

Description: Taking students abroad is one of the most exciting and rewarding parts of language education. It can also be one of the most challenging and ambitious for the teacher or program director. In this meeting, we will hear from three veterans of taking students abroad about their experiences, their problems, and their successes. We will also hear from a number of students who have participated in study abroad programs. If you are interested in study abroad programs but don't know where to start, this is a meeting for you.
