Thomas Warren-Price has taught in England , France and Japan . As a child growing up with dyslexia he received plenty of remedial instruction to help tackle it. He has since developed an interest in the subject from the educator's perspective.

Description: Join Sendai JALT in a visit to an onsen with teacher educator John Fanselow and fellow JALT members. Spend two days in doing activities and discussing two central issues in language education today: reflective teaching and autonomous language learning.

John Fanselow is Professor Emeritus at Teachers College Columbia University where he headed the TESOL program for many years. He is the former president of TESOL and of International Pacific College, New Zealand. He is author of several books including Breaking Rules and Do the Opposite.

Understanding Vygotskyan Theory for Classroom Practice

Due to unforseen circumstances, the venue for the April event has changed. The event on April 20th will now take place in the sousaku shitsu on the 7th floor of the Chuou shimin center (pal city building), close to Sendai station's East exit (higashi guchi)

In this workshop, practical applications of sociocultural theory for the classroom will be introduced and practiced. Reflective activities will be used to provide experiential contact with the theoretical concepts involved, and ways of incorporating (1) the theoretical principles of the Zone of Proximal Development, (2) the social origins of cognition, and (3) the notion of self-regulation into ordinary language lessons will be explored.

Although the focus of the workshop will be on teaching young adults and older, there should be something adaptable for all proficiency and age levels. A good proportion of the presentation time will involve discussion on adapting and incorporating theory into practice.

Deryn P. Verity lives and works in Osaka. She has taught in the United States, Morocco, Jordan, Thailand, Poland, Serbia, and Slovenia. She enjoys working with teachers who are interested in sociocultural theory and Vygotskyan ideas, and currently teaches in the New School University's online MATESOL program and in the Teachers College Tokyo MATESOL program.

The History of ELT in Japan

Description: The program will begin with a short (30 minute or so) review of the history of foreign language teaching in Japan. The remainder of the program which will be a group discussion of the effects of historical precedents on current teaching practices in Japan. Depending on the interests of the group, some of the areas that might be covered are correctness/fluency, translation, exam culture, teacher roles, student expectations, grading system, classroom layout, curriculum design, administrative policies.
Everyone will be encouraged to contribute their ideas!

Description: Sendai JALT��s October meeting will feature two sessions by local members looking at useful types of input:

1. iPod Activities for English Teachers

Apple��s iPod music and video player can be used to present audio, video, photos and slides, and the Internet provides access to a wide range of free or low-cost materials that can be used for teaching with an iPod. In this presentation Mark Neufeld will demonstrate a number of iPod-based activities for enhancing English lessons. The activities will use popular music, movie trailers, podcasts and YouTube videos, vocabulary flash cards, photo slide shows and more. We will also discuss the use of student-generated content, including video and photos.

2. Enhancing the Graded Reading Experience

This session focuses on ideas for helping students engage with graded reading and maintain motivation and interest over the course of a term and beyond. Topics include in-class activities for generating interest and sharing reading experiences, use of multi-media and publisher-supplied resources, and a variety of tips and tricks for running a successful graded reading program. Comments and questions from participants are welcome.
