Baan Unrak: House of Happiness - A Christmas to Remember

Description: Anne Cain is an AET on the JET Program and has been teaching at Chino High School for the past six months. She is from the United States. Instead of going home for Christmas last year, she decided to do something different. She joined an international volunteer organization called GO M.A.D. (Make a Defference). Go M.A.D. is a web-based organization which seeks to aid small service projects around the world. This year GO M.A.D. organized a trip to an orphanage in Sangklaburi, Thailand. The orphanage is called Baan Unrak, meaning House of Happiness. It is run by two yogic nuns and is home to fifty children. GO M.A.D. spent one week at Baan Unrak and helped the children celebrate their first Christmas! Volunteering at Baan Unrak was one of the most amazing experiences she has ever had in her life. It's a story worth listening to.

Description: While living in India over two and half years, the speaker had experiences, good or almost traumatic, but all of which were unforgettable. He takes experiencing different cultures as a key to avoiding misunderstanding and dispute between countries. Drawing on his most unexpected experiences in India and Japan, he will discuss in both English and Japanese how such experiences can play a greater role in promoting cultural understanding.
About the speaker: Dittilio Daniel majored in anthropology at Carleton College and history in graduate school at the University of Wisconsin-Madisona and is currently working as CIR at Suwa chiho jimusho.

13th Suwako Charity Walk

Description: This is the 13th Annual Suwako Charity Walk, which has been held with the help of Prof. Hanazato of Shinshu University and his students. Prof. Hanazato is the chief of Suwako Mizu Sanchi Kankyo Kyoiku Kenkyu Center (Educational Study Center of Water of Suwako and Its Surroundings) Time will come again for us to learn about our surroundings and go over our ways of living. Answers to how to live in harmony with nature will be sought during the walk around Lake Suwa while taking careful note of nature. A forum follows the walk. After the forum, you can enjoy a free boat ride across Lake Suwa with a wide view of the beautiful mountains of the Suwa area on a lovely day of May.

A Comparison of the Roles of Two Teachers in a Team-Teaching Classroom in Japanese Junior High School

Description: Fujimoto-Adamson's presentation discusses the roles and responsibilities in joint teaching of an English native-speaing ALT (Assistant Language Teacher) and a JTL (Japanese Teacher of Language) in one particular English classroom at a Japanese junior high school. Although there seems to be strong support for team-teaching, there is much discussion concerning the many difficulties which have arisen while conducting lessons. This research focusses on the two teachers' roles and responsiblities in the classroom and investigates discursive classroom practice based on recorded classroom data. A qualitative, interpretative approach is used in the analysis. The findings show that the JTL takes overall repsonsibility in the classroom. Also, team-teaching is not alwasy performed effectively because the two different interpretations toward the lesson procedure adoptedly the JTL and the ALT seem to create confusion for the students and teachers themselves. Consequently, she has concluded that if the two teachers wish to effectively share knowledge about language education, the qualifications and training of the ALTs need to be considered.
