Fun Communication Games for Serious Teachers

Description: The presenters believe in the pedagogical effectiveness of using language games in the language classroom. Both children and adults can learn a great deal from a variety of language games. Used appropriately, games serve to stimulate tired students, to encourage friendships and communication, and to promote language retention. The presenters will demonstrate a number of language games that are suitable for reading, speaking, writing, listening, and content-based EFL classes. These are fun games for serious language teachers and language learners.

14th Annual Suwako Charity Walk

Venue: Meet at 8:10 am at the Yagai Ongaku-do (the outside music auditorium) of Katakura Fureai Nagisa (the lakeside park across from to the Katakura bldg) in Suwa City
Description: The 14th Annual Suwako Charity Walk offers an opportunity to walk around Lake Suwa while talking with experts from Shinshu University about the local ecology. It is followed by a forum from 12:00 to 13:30 held at Kamaguchi suimon next to the lake at which a short environmental talk, a musical concert by Hisashi Miura and a quiz can be enjoyed. The event is open to all, especially families with children. Please bring your own packed lunch. Donations are welcome.

Childrens' Storytelling Through Kamishibai

Description: Taeko Okamoto, currently an ESL consultant working in the USA, will give a talk on the practical use of Japanese "kamishibai" as a means to tell English stories to people of all ages. Taeko has much experience in this important field both in the USA and Japan, on T.V. and at various EFL/ESL institutions. In this presentation she will show how the art of Kamishibai picture storytelling can be implemented in ESL/EFL teaching with ready-made commercialized kamishibai stories, magazine pictures, hand-drawn pictures, and photos. She will demonstrate how all four skills can be integrated into the storytelling lesson. We will also have the opportunity to enjoy live Kamishibai storytelling by this popular presenter-storyteller.
