Reading - how to turn students of any age into bookworms

Description: Oliver Bayley of Oxford University Press will give a presentation on the use of the Oxford University Press graded readers. There is definitely a reading "boom" in Japan at the moment, with more interest in reading (and particularly extensive reading) than ever before. While examining why graded reading can have such a huge impact on learners, Bayley will look at how teachers are currently using graded readers in various schools, as well as some of the latest graded readers from Oxford University Press (including the Dolphin series for young children)and a variety of fun and effective activity types for students of all ages. This is a practical presentation particularly useful for all teachers looking for ways to improve the reading skills of their students.

Mini Colloquium: Local ELT Research by Local Teachers

Description: This joint Shinshu ELT Research Group and Shinshu JALT is a free day event in which four local teacher-researchers will present their most recent research on their local classrooms. There will be two presentations in the morning from 10:30, two in the afternoon from 1:00, followed by an Open Forum entitled "Teaching a Subject in English to Non-Native Speakers" moderated by Theron Muller. This is an event best suited to teachers and researchers who wish to listen to and participate in more academic presentations. Participants are asked to register for the event by contacting John Adamson (Shinshu JALT Program Chair).

Description: Greg Birch will be talking about the idea of task-based learning and how we can use it in our teaching. Task-based learning is an increasingly popular concept amoung English language teachers around the world. Greg will illustrate with examples from his lessons how this approach to teaching can supplement your course, for example with bilingual grammar resource books. This workshop is intended as being very interactive with plenty of opportunities to explore how task-based learning can integrate fluency and grammar. Teachers at all levels from private language schools to universities can benefit from this fascinating new approach to teaching and learning.

The 16th Annual Suwa Charity walk

Description: This is a morning and afternoon day event in which people are invited to join JALT Shinshu in a walk around Lake Suwa to the Kamaguchisuimon Kanritou. Donations are invited to go to a local enviromental group dedicated to cleaning the lake and its surroundings. It is a family event which welcomes children and everyone interested in the local environment. Starting in the morning, members of the Shinshu University Research team will accompany participants walking around the lake and, on the way, talk to them about ecological issues in language which is easy to understand. When we arrive at the Kamaguchisuimon,we will have a Forum with a quiz for children about their walk and the environment of the lake. There will also be a short musical concert.

Meet at 8:10 a m at the lakeside Katakura Fureiai Nagisa (the outside auditorium). We will take a ferry back after the forum around 2pm. Please bring lunch, something to write with for the quiz and good walking shoes!

Team-teaching methodologies for High Schools: Two Workshops

Description: For this afternoon event two local presenters, Shizuo Tabata and Danny Majdanac, will give short workshops on teaching methodologies at High Schools. Shizuo Tabata will talk about what makes a good team-teaching class, giving examples from his experience. Danny Majdanac will give a short session illustrating how Jazz Chants can be successfully implemented into the team-teaching classroom. This is intended as a practical afternoon with the needs of team-teachers and teachers of large classes in mind.

Shizuo Tabata works as a school inspector in the Matsumoto area and has many years team-teaching experience. Danny Majdanac is an ALT from Canada now working at Okaya Higashi High School.

To get to Nan-nan Hiroba building, come out of Minami Matsumoto station, turn left and walk 5 minutes. The building is just across from JUSCO.

Innovative Teaching Methodologies for Colleges and Universities: 3 workshops

Description: In this afternoon meeting, three presenters will give short, practical workshops focusing on: the use of movies, the teaching of presentation skills, and the integratation of skills-based teaching into large classes.

Takako Seito, from Tokyo University of Science and Technology in Suwa, will be demonstrating how popular movies can be used to encourage interaction in large university classes.

Mark Brierley, from Shinshu University in Matsumoto, will show how presentation skills classes can be taught innovatively and be assessed by students themselves.

Theron Muller, from Seisen Jogakuin College in Nagano, will look at how large college classes can be broken down into smaller working groups and how skills-based tasks can be used to motivate them.

All workshops are especially suitable for those teachers working in colleges and universities.

Activities for Young Learners of English - Listening, Thinking and Learning

Description: Hideki Sakai shows how to make learning English more effective among young learners by engaging them in meaningful activities. These activities should be arranged so that students become aware of the meanings of English while performing a practical task. During this presentation, Sakai illustrates how learning English can become thought-provoking and stimulating, in contrast to the mechanical and boring style many young students are used to. This session will be one in which the audience can practice the recommended activities themselves.

Asian Englishes - English Learning and Japanese Modern Girls

Description: In this session Professor Fujise will talk about how young women in the Meiji Era studied English and the motivation for doing so. This fascinating topic will describe how women who learned English were thought to be ideal wives for elite male university graduates at that time. Knowledge of English was thought to enhance the status of women and represented the sign of being a privileged and educated "modern girl" in that era. Fujise sensei will also introduce the works of Futabei Shimei, the first modern female writer of "Ukigumo", and Natsume Soseki who wrote about how how such fashionable young women were regarded as being charming. She will also contrast the teaching of English to women in other Asian countries.

This talk is a great opportunity to learn about how English was taught to women at a crucial time in the development of Japan. Please join us for a thought-provoking afternoon. Professor Fujise will be presenting in Japanese.
