The Fifth Annual JALT Pan-SIG Conference 'Authentic Communication: Process and Purpose' will have three plenary speakers sponsored by the Bilingual (Dr. John Maher), Pragmatics (Dr. Donna Tatsuki), and Testing and Evaluation (Dr. James Dean Brown) SIGs. The Teacher Education SIG is also participating in this conference. The conference will be at Tokai University, Shimizu Campus in Miho-Shimizu, Shizuoka City on May 13-14.

The past ten years have been full of discussion about active communication. This conference wishes to build on ideas regarding what makes real communication effective and how can we teach this to our students. This conference aims to address issues of teaching educators, testing, second language acquisition, and practical issues as well as pragmatics. This conference has a second call for presentation proposals in the form of formal lectures, and poster sessions. Please refer to the home page at jalt.org/pansig/2006 for details. There are limited presentation slots left, so you are strongly urged to submit your proposal well before the February 10, 2006 deadline. Presenters will be notified by February 24, 2006 if their paper is accepted.

There will be up to 70 presentations and over 15 publishers displays. Likewise, take a look at the special social events on the home page. This year's banquet will be held inside the Marine Science Museum of Tokai University so that people can view various marine life while eating and talking with colleagues. There will also be a free tour to view Mt Fuji and Shizuoka City from a mountain scenic lookout, Nippon Daira, available to the first 50 people who register and sign up for this option. Please access the home page to get inside previews and more information. Lodging options are also listed. Please feel free to contact pansig2006@yahoo.co.jp if you have further questions.

Respectfully yours,

Peter John Wanner, Ph.D.
