Description: Discussion and planning of meetings and events for Shizuoka JALT Chapter for 2007.

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to come and give your input and ideas. At the conclusion of this meeting we will have our annual calendar. If there is a special guest speaker you would like to present or a particular topic you would like hear/learn about, then let us know your wish and we will do our best to schedule it into our calendar. We want to hear the voice of our members.

This meeting is free for both JALT members and non-members.

Developing and Implementing Simple Class Websites

Description: Despite time constraints, lack of familiarity with available 'user ready' technology, or even hesitation or aversion to the idea of 'webpage construction' nearly anyone can easily build a class website.

By utilizing 'user ready' pre-constructed group sites, language instructors can supplement instruction, store data and student assignments, utilize task-based learning and multi-skills approaches to lessons, as well as close the gap in fluency between students with higher and lower abilities. Moreoever, this kind of easy-to-use technology has been shown to raise student independence and accountability, develop research skills, and interraction with materials and their peers, and to generally give students a greater stake in their own participation in the course.

The presenter will show participants how to quickly build and implement and manage a group website, as well give some advice on possible drawbacks and pitfalls to avoid. Some time will be given for question and answer or for hands-on demonstration of the technology.

Robert McLaughlin, is a lecturer at Tokoha Gakuen. He holds an Masters in Education in TESL, and is currently the Vice-President of the Association of Canadian Teachers in Japan (ACTJ). Originally, from Vancouver Island, Canada, Rob has been teaching for 15 years in a variety of positions. He is interested in comparative education and working with returnee students in particular.

Description: Professional Presentations.

Studies have shown when people are asked to rank things they fear most, Speaking in Public is always near the top of the list, often higher than death. Learning techniques of how to speak and present in public will dramatically reduce your fear. In this presentation Mr. Berlin will teach you how to give a professional presentation. You will learn how to effectively organize your presentation beginning with the all important, powerful opening. You will learn which is the best AV equipment to use to best support your key points. You will be taught simple, easy to remember acronyms that will help you build a great presentation. Come and find out what KILL, KISS, the 3T's, the 3D's and FUR are. As well as what are the openers suicide.

Scott Berlin has been teaching presentation skills for over twelve years in both academic and business settings. He currently is teaching at Tokai University in Shimizu.

1. Actually Teaching Listening: The importance of script and of supra-segmental phonology 2. Teaching the Strategies of Speaking

Description: This meeting will have a very special treat, Mr. Marr will treat us to not just one, but two interesting and motivating presentations. Each presentation is one hour long with a break in between.

1. Actually Teaching Listening

This talk looks to examine how you can go beyond giving practice in listening and actually teach listening skills. Knowledge of script is something that can be taught that helps students with their top-down predictive skills. Teaching supra-segemental phonology helps students with their bottom-up decoding skills.

2. Teaching the Strategies of Speaking

We all use strategies when we speak: to confirm or clarify what we're saying and what we're hearing, to show interest, to maintain and develop conversations, to help with fluency, to compensate for language we don't have.

Alastair Graham-Marr, author of Communication Spotlight a new text that teaches students how to use these strategies will examine the whys of teaching strategies and look at the sort of strategies he argues should be taught. Alastair has presented to the Fukuoka, Kitakyusu, Iwate, Akita, Nagoya, Yokohama, Saitama and Chiba JALT chapters over the past two years.
