Poster Presentation Session – Materials for Classroom Activities

Speaker: Local poster presenters
Time: 2:00 PM - 4:30 PM (Sat., June 18th, 2005)
Fee (JALT members): TBA
Fee (One-Day members): TBA
Prefecture: Kochi
City: Kochi
Venue: The Fureai Centre in Otoyo, opposite Otaguchi Railway Station
Description: The second meeting of East Shikoku JALT will again be at the FUREAI CENTRE in Otoyo, on Saturday 18th June. We have decided to stick with the same venue in the hope that the members from Tokushima, Kagawa and Kochi who came last time now know the way and will come again and bring their friends. The meeting will start at 2.00 and will finish around 4.30. Someone from JALT will be at the centre from 1.00.

HOW TO GET THERE

By train: the venue is almost opposite the Otaguchi Station, north of Otoyo. This is a small station. If you want to get off at a bigger station (more and faster trains) we will meet you by car if you tell us the time and station. Contact: lingley@cc.kochi-u.ac.jp

By car: (Lifts from Kochi are available. Contact lingley@cc.kochi-u.ac.jp)

1. Exit the expressway at Otoyo.

2. At the traffic light turn right following directions to Ikeda/Takamatsu. Go through a short tunnel.

3. At the T junction turn left following the sign to Ikeda/Takamatsu. You are on Route 32. Drive for about 6/7 kilometres until you see signs for Otaguchi Station.

4. Turn right off the 32, go over an orange bridge. Turn left at the T junction. The FURE AI CENTRE is a big grey building on the left about 200 meters down the road. Lots of parking available.

PROGRAMME Poster Presentation Session – Materials for Classroom Activities

This session is a practical session aimed at getting several members to design a poster to present their own materials or teaching idea. A poster might typically be about eight A4 sheets mounted on a cardboard poster sheet with diagrams/texts arranged in a way that provides a rationale and examples of the materials. In a poster presentation presenters stand by their posters and discuss them with other participants who move freely from poster to poster. It’s a great ice-breaker and often leads to more feedback and communication than a formal presentation from the front of the room. We plan to have one hour for half the presenters and the other hour for the other half, so that presenters all get a chance to circulate too.

To get things going, I will make a 20-minute presentation to introduce a few points in relation to designing interactive tasks in integrated units, based on the Kochi University curriculum project. I shall briefly discuss holistic activities and supporting exercises, distinguishing between EXERCISES and TASKS as a central focus for discussion. The emphasis is on classroom practice and we hope that we all take something back to try out in our own classrooms.

Anyone who would like to share their materials on a poster, please contact me at nunn@cc.kochi-u.ac.jp. Anyone is welcome either with or without a poster.

We look forward to seeing you all in Otoyo,

Roger Nunn.
