Facilitating English Language Learning

Description: This presentation is about pedagogy as it applies to language teaching. This seminar will examine how using appropriate classroom learning and reflection activities can promote the development of communicative language by students and provide examples of activities that teachers can use. We will focus on the methods that can help facilitate learning by making it relevant and interactive and identify strategies that encourage students to use the target language in school and external settings. This seminar will also examine the use of peer learning activities. For teachers working in classrooms with JETS, this seminar can also consider ways to make that relationship more productive. This is a commercial presentation by the English Language Teacher Education Australia Project, which is sponsored by the Australia Japan Foundation.

Telling Stories in English Class

Description: Don Cherry works with EFL students as they work on the language necessary to describe the events portrayed in a picture story. These language students operate at a fairly high level on, among other things, English sounds and melody, equivalent expressions, and phrasal verbs. All of this work is done by the students with a minimum of interference by the instructor.

Description: Part one of today's presentation looks at language textbook selection for elementary school-age classes in the language school. Part two illustrates a basic lesson plan that is easily accessible to the new teacher in Japan, plus 5 or 6 supplementary games and activities for groups in the EFL classroom.
About the speaker:
Simon Tanton has been teaching English in Japan for 16 years. At present he is teaching at all of the junior high schools and elementary schools in Shinshiro and at Aichi Kyoiku Daigaku Fuzoku Junior High School. In the afternoons he runs a successful language school in Toyokawa with his two partners.

In this presentation, we will look at some of the typical features of stories told in conversation among adults. We will then consider how to make our students more aware of these features and how to use them to improve their own storytelling techniques.
