Loanwords: Lexical Hindrance or Latent Storehouse?

Description: With the apparent rise in usage of English loanwords in speech among Japanese young people, it may be said that there is a lessening of the linguistic distance between the two languages. However, there has been some debate regarding the degree to which loanwords may be purposefully employed in lesson design as well as the overall role of loanwords in EFL instruction. The presenters will outline the debate on the topic through a review of the literature, and will summarize the results of their recent research. Lastly, the presenters will outline specific learning tasks that utilize loan words and English cognates effectively.

Make Reading Easy and Fun! - with the Potato Pals

Description: Oliver will guide participants through practical and enjoyable group-work activities and classroom ideas that will benefit all teachers of very young learners. Oliver will also introduce the Potato Pals, Oxford’s newest course for pre-school/kindergarten-aged children. All participants will receive a free Potato Pals reader. In the second half of the presentation, the speaker will look at the topic of reading - how to turn students of any age and interest into "Bookworms". Participants will look at how teachers are currently using graded readers in various schools, as well as some of the latest graded readers from Oxford University Press (including OUP's new series - Dolphins) and a variety of fun and effective activity types for students of all ages.

Description: Using selections from the 2002 anthology "Faces in the Crowds; a Tokyo international anthology," we will explore the ways university English teachers can employ literature, in short forms, to inspire class discussion, provide topics for speech or presentation and present examples for writing assignments - either critical essays or creative works. The text chosen is recently published (2002) and includes much material about current Japan and/or written by current residents of Japan.

An Overview of Japanese English education from the Meiji period to the present

Description: English education in Japan is sometimes incorrectly stereotyped as a static state of grammar-translation, coupled with the memorization of grammatical minutiae in order to pass The Entrance Exam. However, from the Meiji Era, to Harold Palmer, to the JET Program, to the ministry's recent plan to cultivate "Japanese With English Abilities," Japan's English education has been "dynamic." This presentation seeks to provide an overview of important developments in Japanese English education and may be controversial with respect to future prospects.

Description: This is a presentation on how to utilize a number of theatre games as icebreakers and language building tools in the English classroom. In particular, the presentation will focus on role-playing and mimicry as integral parts of the language learning process. Excerpts from the Nagoya Players' upcoming production of "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead" will be presented as a means of highlighting the power of word play both in drama and in the language learning experience.

Orientation for College Studies outside the Classroom

Description: In this presentation, Steve Brown describes and evaluates an orientation program for incoming students in the English Department of a women's junior college. The program was aimed at fostering students' awareness of their own learning styles, and also at alerting them to alternative approaches to learning English.

This won't be a one-way presentation. Steve will show some of the approaches used in the program - active participation is encouraged! He also hopes to share ideas for ways in which this kind of program might work in other contexts and institutions.
