Roles, Strategies and Skills for Activating Student Discussions

Description: The conversational skills necessary for participating in a content-based classroom discussion are elusive yet crucial. Defining rolesand providing the language support necessary to exchange ideas are two elements that the presentor has found helpful for a successful classroom discussion. The presentor will share her experience in developing these skills in the junior college setting and will offer participants the opportunity to discuss how these ideas can be applied to their contexts.

On-line Drills for Learning and Teaching

Description: This is a workshop where participants will learn how to make on-line drills on the Internet and how to use them in their classes. A newly developed on-line system called WebASC (Web-based Automatic Shiken Creator) by Kobayashi's research team at Rikkyo University and Mie University will be used to create Web tests and drills. You will be able to use them in your own classes even after the workshop. No knowledge of programming is necessary to create Web exercises in the system.

How to Make Web Pages to Facilitate Learning and Teaching

Description: This is a workshop where participants will learn how to make their own Web pages. We will learn basic HTML , how to put links to other pages and also how to use audio/video files on the Web. The pages you are going to make in this workshop will help you use various online resources in an organized way. You will not need to have your own directory in any server to send files to, because you will use a Web-making system called the New WebMaker developed by a research group of teachers at Rikkyo University and Mie University. The system was completed in 1999 assisted by a grant from the Ministry of Education and Science. You will be able to use the system even after the workshop from your own networked computer, as long as you can use a browser.

How to Make and Use Video Files for Teaching and Learning on the Internet

Description: We will first learn how to make video files from videos we will record by a digital camera, and then we will convert them into video files by iMovie on a Macintosh. Then we will send them to our directories of a server by the New WebMaker developed in the project done by a grant-for-aid from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. After that we will put links in our Web pages to these video files and to on-line drills which we have made / will make on WebASC developed in another grant-for-aid project, so that we can combine video files and on-line drills together. These Web pages will be useful to teach any academic subject such as foreign languages, music, math, etc.

Description: Motivation is crucial for successful learning. What techniques should we employ to encourage motivation and maximize learning in our language classrooms? Two ways are:

  1. to ensure learners talk about what interests them; and
  2. to teach language for specific real-world functions.
High-interest, relevant content, presented at an appropriate level, and clear, achievable task-based activities, will further enhance learning and involvement. This presentation will explore these and other issues. Activities will be drawn from appropriate new materials from Longman.
