Duo la Drama! Using Drama in Language Teaching

Description: Two presenters share their approaches to using drama in language teaching:

  • Jazz Chants Fairy Tales:
    What are Jazz Chants Fairy Tales? How they are beneficial to both students and teachers. They are a must for children at the early stages of learning English.
  • Improvisational Psychodrama:
    Psychodrama is a therapeutic technique conceived and developed by Jacob L. Moreno, MD. Using experiential guided drama techniques, psychodrama provides a safe, supportive environment in which participants can practice new roles, language and behaviors, thus facilitating insight, personal growth, and integration.

On-line Drills for Learning and Teaching

Description: This is a workshop where participants will learn how to make on-line drills on the Internet and how to use them in their classes. A newly developed on-line system called WebASC (Web-based Automatic Shiken Creator) by Kobayashi's research team at Rikkyo University and Mie University will be used to create Web tests and drills. You will be able to use them in your own classes even after the workshop. No knowledge of programming is necessary to create Web exercises in the system.

Enabling, Shaping and Enhancing Expression

Description: In this workshop, Peter Ross will present on what is usually described as "error correction;" however, as his thinking has evolved, he has come to believe that the presuppositions behind this phrase are arrogant. In the workshop, he will, therefore, suggest a different approach to this topic, and demonstrate using some of the tools he has developed.
This is the second in a series of EfJET (English for Japanese English Teachers) workshops. In this format, the first part of the demonstration/workshop consists of an opportunity for Japanese English Teachers to experience an advanced language class taught using a thought-provoking approach. In the second half, participants will have an opportunity to discuss the lesson as teachers. Native speakers of English are invited to observe the first part of the workshop, and offer their comments during the feedback session at the end.

Teaching methods will be demonstrated as an actual lesson for Japanese English teachers. Native speakers of English are invited to observe the demonstration, and join in the discussion afterwards.
