ELT Materials Use & Design: Problems & Resolutions

Description: This presentation will address some difficulties teachers often face in course design, while trying to find appropriate materials to use in the EFL classroom. Several suggestions will be offered as ways to solve these problems in the many & various teaching environments the presenter has encountered in 19 years teaching in Japan. Then he will focus on how to utilize published materials, or design appropriate materials for specific situations. Finally, the presenter will introduce his own attempt to design appropriate materials for the non-intensive nature of most Japanese university classes, and how this resulted in his writing the McGraw-Hill series, What About You?

LIOJ MiniConference: Creative Teaching Ideas

Description: LIOJ is Language Institute of Japan, a private English language institute supported by Zaidan Hojin MRA House, a non-profit educational foundation. The topics of this mini-conference include:

  • using story books,
  • teaching beginners,
  • self-learning strategies,
  • pairwork,
  • holiday lesson plans,
  • nonverbals to help children, and
  • class management activities.
These topic workshops are held during three 45-minute time slots with 2 or 3 presentations each. Some presentations are oriented more toward children's classes while others toward high school to adult. This conference is being co-sponsored by ETJ Odawara, ETJ Yokohama, LIOJ, and Yokohama JALT.

Description: Jud Taylor of JLS (Japan Language Systems) will present on a PhonePass, a unique listening testing system. PhonePass tests are delivered over a normal telephone, and accurate, detailed results are delivered over the web in minutes. In discussing its development and current use, he will also address many issues of testing listening that are commonly faced. The system and presentation will be high-tech, yet straightforward and high-interest.
