In this workshop, Nicolas Gromik and Brian Teaman share their extensive experience with web-based video. Gromik's strengths are in Windows and Movie Maker for student-created projects, while Teaman offers his experience with the Macintosh and Premiere for web-based learning materials. The core of this workshop will be presented by Gromik, who will demonstrate how to use and teach MS Movie Maker to Japanese students. Participants will learn how to:

  • teach Movie Maker;
  • edit a film;
  • create resources and learn how to use them;
  • implement a mini-documentary project
  • create a time line to incorporate it in the curriculum.
MS Movie Maker allows the participant to edit a range of educational projects, and hence empowers students in their creative expression of original ideas in English. Participants will be able to explore aspects of Gromik's research with this extremely basic yet exciting tool. Teaman provides additional assistance on getting high quality audio for video and presents information on Macintosh, Premiere, Quicktime, and RealAudio. Come join us for some hands-on experience and sharing of any questions about this growing area of CALL. (Available in JAPANESE at http://jaltcall.org/call2004/workshops-j.html)

Introduction to Online Course Design with Moodle

Speaker: Don Hinkelman, Sapporo Gakuin University
Time: 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM (Fri., June 4th, 2004)
Fee (JALT members): 2,000 yen
Fee (One-Day members): 2,000 yen
Prefecture: Ibaraki
City: Mito
Venue: Building R, Tokiwa University, College of Applied International Studies. Miwa 1-430-1 Mito-shi, Ibaraki-ken (reserve a place: conf-workshops@jaltcall.org)
Description: (Please note that this event is free only if you have pre-registered by May 5 for the JALT CALL 9th Annual Conference on June 5th and 6th. Otherwise the cost is 2,000 yen (discounts are available for JALT, LET and JACET members).
Teachers with no programming knowledge will prepare a website in an hour with discussion forums, chatrooms, teacher-student online journals, polls, quiz questions, and announcements. This course website will then serve as an interactive supplement to a face-to-face classroom.
By creating a 24/7-accessible online community in language learning, students can recycle and reinforce class lessons daily in their free time at home or school. Moodle makes this possible for ordinary teachers who want to focus on language lessons, not technical setup.
Each interactive web activity will first be demonstrated and then, in a hands-on fashion, participants will create similar activities on their own course site. Having designed their own course in this workshop, participants can continue to use it for one year with their class.
Those who want to expand to multiple courses with their own domain name should contact the workshop facilitator at least three weeks before the workshop to register a name. To gain familiarity with the software before the workshop, visit the Forums area at the JALTCALL Conference website: http://jalthokkaido.org/moodle/course/view.php?id=5 (Available in JAPANESE at http://jaltcall.org/call2004/workshops-j.html)

The conference provides a forum for teachers, technicians, providers, researchers and administrators who have an interest in Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). JALTCALL 2004 seeks to promote the exchange of research findings and innovations, and to offer opportunities to discuss the challenges and potential solutions leading to more effective use of computer assisted language learning. The theme for this year's conference is Human Computer Interaction (HCI) or, more simply, 'human issues' (social, physical or psychological) for CALL learners and the CALL environment.
Saturday finishes nicely with an Evening Network Reception (The Saturday Night Social!), which is a chance to network informally with conference presenters and conference-goers. Enjoy food, beverages and an atmosphere of warm collegiality. Network reception tickets include a free drink and there will also be a bar available throughout the evening. The cost for this evening social is 3000 yen (for those who have not preregistered by the 5/5 deadline).
