Speaker: Victoria Taylor, ECC Foreign Language Institute
Time: 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM (Sat., March 11th, 2006)
Fee (JALT members): free
Fee (One-Day members): 1,000
Prefecture: Gifu
City: Gifu
Venue: Heartful Square (southeast section of Gifu JR Station), Gifu City, Gifu-ken
Description: In this interactive presentation, Ms. Taylor will
demonstrate an outline for a 5-week course consisting
of 10 separate lessons focusing on common
pronunciation errors by Japanese speakers of English.
Taken as a course, there is an initial and final test
to measure validity. Each lesson includes a minimal
pair or 2 - 3 similar sounds. The lessons can be
taught as a pronunciation course or individually to
target specific errors. Each lesson focuses firstly on
an individual sound, a similar one, then moves on to
minimal pairs practice. The emphasis is on mouth
position and repetition without boredom.
Self-discovery exercises will augment the
presentation, so participants will be encouraged to
develop more ideas for drilling sounds without sending
our students to sleep.
The techniques will at the very least be useful for
all teachers who want to incorporate `quick cures` or
give pronunciation practice exercises to their
students. Simple and above all, these lessons are fun
and suitable for students of all ages. Credit for the
5-week course goes to Chris Weaver. The course can be
done with or without the books Pronunciation Pairs and
Pronunciation Games.
