Meaning-Focused Learning Through Drama

Speaker: Kathi Emori, Nagoya Women's University
Time: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM (Sat., April 21st, 2007)
Fee (JALT members): free
Fee (One-Day members): 500 yen
Prefecture: Gifu
City: Gifu
Venue: Heartful Square (southeast section of Gifu JR Station), Gifu City, Gifu-ken
Description: Students often are building on their explicit knowledge base, however, moving that into the implicit area can be tougher when faced with the same dialogues and classroom work they are usually exposed to. Through drama, meaning-focused learning draws on their explicit knowledge and helps transfer the usage into a more implicit arena for practical usage.

In this workshop, drama related activities will be presented for this purpose of meaning-focused learning. The participants will even try their hand at a few of the activities and produce their own skits as a student would in this kind of class.

The Ins and Outs of Getting Published

Speaker: Steve Cornwell, Ed.D., Osaka Jogakuin College
Time: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM (Sat., May 19th, 2007)
Fee (JALT members): free
Fee (One-Day members): 500 yen
Prefecture: Gifu
City: Gifu
Venue: Heartful Square (southeast section of Gifu JR Station), Gifu City, Gifu-ken
Description: Whether studying for a masters or a doctorate; conducting quantitative or qualitative research, or working as a teacher or administrator, one thing that almost all of us working in education have in common is the need to publish. Many of us live in a publish-or-perish world, and even if we do not feel the pressure to publish, publishing offers a chance to engage with our colleagues about our work.

This presentation will help writers understand the publishing process from selecting a journal and submitting an article to receiving reviewer's feedback and handling revisions. It will discuss what reviewers look for, show samples of feedback authors receive, and provide advice on what to do if you don't agree with the editor. It will describe specific publishing opportunities available through the Japan Association for Language Teaching (JALT). The format will allow for lots of questions. It might help to look over the submission guidelines at jalt.org/main/publications before the presentation though it is not mandatory.

Steve Cornwell is a graduate of the Ed.D. program at TUJ and is Editor of the Jalt Journal. In addition to his editing work, he has been an Editorial Advisory Board member for JALT publications, has served on the Publications Committee for TESOL, Inc. and has reviewed manuscripts for various publishers including Oxford University Press, Cambridge University Press, and MacMillian Education.

Exploring ways to use communicative language tasks with grammar-based (exam-oriented) high school English lessons

Speaker: Masaomi Kitamura, Uguisudani high school
Time: 7:00 PM - 8:45 PM (Sat., September 29th, 2007)
Fee (JALT members): free
Fee (One-Day members): 1,000 yen
Prefecture: Gifu
City: Gifu
Venue: Heartful Square (southeast section of Gifu JR Station), Gifu City, Gifu-ken
Description: In this hands-on workshop, participants will experience the textbook and testing requirements faced by Japanese teachers of English (JTE's) as they try to fulfill Monkasho suggestions to introduce more communicative English into their classes. The reality is that teachers have very little time to deviate from the text and test preparation remains the most crucial element of their job.

This workshop will provide an excellent opportunity for native speakers to experience how JTE's view communicative English within the broader context of English education. For JTE's, this workshop will provide a venue to compare teaching ideas and collaborate with native speakers to develop task-based EFL lesson plans and bridge the gap between testing and communicative English.
