Listening Strategy Techniques: Does It Help To Teach Them?

Description: Dr. Tsujioka will present an analysis of a study on listening strategy introduction in a university EFL context. The results give insights into practical ways to teach listening strategies for Japanese students. Participants will actively engage in a range of teaching techniques which help students develop skills for intonation, tone-group boundary, stress and rhythm, predicting and inferencing.

Description: Marc Sheffner of DramaWorks, will introduce DramaWorks' two textbooks Star Taxi (2000) and PopStars (2002). These textbooks aimed at teenagers and adults use drama techniques to provide intensive speaking and listening practice in an entertaining and memorable way. Both books are stories told in 20 scenes of dialogue. They are easy and fun to use, and do not require any drama experience, props or special acting ability. They are complete courses, and include warm-ups, language activities and teacher's notes. They may also be used as supplements. This will be a workshop-style, participatory presentation.

Description: Back to School Bonanza! Various members of the Gunma chapter of Jalt will share their favorite teaching ideas or lesson plans. Participants are invited to exchange teaching materials and used books. This is a chance to learn about what other members in our local chapter of JALT are doing in their classrooms. Last year's Bonanza was well-attended and members enjoyed having a chance to exchange information. This year's event will be followed by an optional dinner at a local restaurant.

Taking the Dialogue Out of the Textbook

Description: In this workshop, ways of taking the dialogue out of the textbook will be explored. Free from the textbook, the formerly faceless dialogue characters become living members of the classroom, and the dialogue becomes a dynamic three-way exchange between the teacher, the students, and the dialogue characters. This interactive, hands-on workshop will feature a variety of games, activities, and approaches appropriate for all ages and ability levels.

Description: This presentation introduces Criterion Online Writing Evaluation offered by Educational Testing Service (ETS), the maker of the TOEFL test. Version 2 of the Criterion software offers teachers and students instant scores and 38 categories of linguistic feedback including discourse competency. Teachers will be pleased with the enhanced classroom management system, the online writer's handbook and the friendly platform that allows students to continually write and revise. Information concerning TOEFL 2005 (future TOEFL) will be also provided. Questions will be invited both during the break and at the end of the presentation. This presentation will be sponsored by Council Exchange (CIEE) Educational Testing Services (ETS).

Description: This presentation will show how folk stories and folkdances can be used to teach multicultural concepts in the elementary classroom. These engaging stories allow children to view the world through the eyes of a new culture. Hands-on activities will be shown which include co-operative methods of re-telling and dramatizing the stories. Folkdances provide a kinesthetic learning experience about culture. Termed "the dance of the common people," folkdances communicate emotions through rhythm and movement. Creative movement activities then allow the students to reinterpret and internalize language concepts.

Description: This demonstration will describe an interesting student-generated class project that produces a professional-looking newsletter. Students themselves selected the general focus and topics of the newsletter. They also selected their own roles on the paper, choosing from among such staff positions as reporters, editors, inputters, layout/design, photographers,proof readers, etc. In this presentation, Joyce Cunningham outlines the steps involved in undertaking such a project.

Description: Shogakukan Corpus Network (SCN) has offered the BNC Online service via Internet since this August. SCN provides a user-friendly Japanese interface with a high-performance search engine developed by Shogakukan, Co. The Corpus Service of SCN would be a very effective tool for all English teachers as a higher English reference. We will demonstrate how the BNC Online can be a valuable tool in English Education.
