Description: Since Monbu-kagakusho introduced the idea of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) in the Course of Study, nurturing practical "communicative competence" has been emphasized in the Japanese secondary English education. However, literature poses some questions to the overvaluation of CLT in Japanese educational system. This workshop presents the results of the research based on interviews with 19 junior and senior high school teachers regarding how they reacted to CLT, before inviting participants into discussion on CLT in Japan.

News in the Classroom: Reading Activities with the Asahi Weekly

Description: Students enjoy reading English newspapers because they are authentic, current and cover a broad range of topics. For the same reasons, however, newspapers can be difficult for teachers to use effectively. This presentation introduces a curriculum for using the Asahi Weekly in the university classroom. The audience will have the opportunity to experience several activities that promote reading and critical thinking skills. A discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of using newspapers in the classroom will follow.

Electronic Dictionary vs. Paper Dictionary: How Differences in Dictionary Interfaces Affect English Language Learning

Description: Recently, handheld Electronic Dictionaries (ED) are becoming popular in Japanese schools. On the other hand, there are still some teachers who doubt the effects of an ED and recommend the use of Paper Dictionaries (PD).

In this presentation, the presenter will review some past comparative studies of ED and PD, and analyze the effects of types of dictionary interfaces on English language learning. This will be followed by some classroom activities using an ED.

Description: In this presentation, the instructional procedure will be introduced from paragraph writing instruction to compilation of year-end books with the students �f works. The students instructed were high school students with average or lower-level proficiency in English. The report includes the initial stage of paper-based project to computer based one using online BBS through Groupware system via the Internet.

The same instruction in college level will also be touched upon.
