Getting Students to Express Themselves

Description: Learning a language provides special challenges for all students. Thispresentation shows how to use a learner- centered, task- based approach toencourage active communication, getting students to learn by doing. Thepresenter will use examples from Expressions, a new 3-level, 4-skillseries by David Nunan, to demonstrate the step-by-step language-buildingtasks that help provide students with the skills, confidence, andmotivation to become more fluent English speakers.

Description: Though teachers and students are different levels, we both struggle toexpand our vocabulary. Would you like to join me in a workshop designed todiscuss techniques/approaches in teaching and learning of vocabulary? Thefirst half of the workshop will be hands-on presentation of a way to expandone's vocabulary through the knowledge of word formation. Severalcopy-and-use handouts will be available. The second half of the workshop isfor participants to share the ways they succeed in teaching and learning newvocabulary. What strategies do you use? What is your most effective strategy?

Description: This presentation will be on teaching Japanese as a foreign language at secondary schools in the U. S. Based on the concept of Child Language Acquisition, the presenter demonstrates and describes her teaching techniques and approaches to teach 4 skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), grammar, and the culture. Seeing is believing, so several videos of actual teaching, students' skits, speeches as well as students' projects and tests will be shown to illustrate the above. You won't believe how much Japanese they can learn in a few years without any exposure to the language outside of the class!
