Description: During the first hour, Professor Shima will introduce "The Look and Listen Method." This is a scientifically-organized phonics approach for teaching reading to young learners. Professor Shima manages a teacher training course for elementary school English teachers in Yamaguchi Prefecture. During the second hour, Ms. Mackay will give practical ideas for teaching children.

Description: Matsuda Gruenewald, 80 years old, will describe her experience in a Japanese-American internment camp. Last year she published her first book on the topic. In the talk, she will be painfully honest, showing participants how historical wrongs are infinitely nuanced as they reverberate through the lives of human beings.

Description: The ability to imitate seems to involve not only general intelligence but also L2 ability. A psycholinguistic experiment recently found that English majors, in contrast to non-English majors, produced utterances closer to those of model speakers. The implications for the classroom are explained. Significant Q & A is guaranteed. The talk will be followed by "My Share," in which everyone is encouraged to talk 5-10 minutes about any language-learning topic.

Description: High school students were observed debating in English classes. A chaotic period in which learners pushed themselves to paraphrase and improvise their speech during debate was recognized. This presentation explores crucial factors which push learners to make maximum use of English in the classroom.

Next, Dr. Luster will explain his web project, which is being designed to give students access to English at understandable levels wherever they may be, through a computer website, a cellphone site, or podcasts.

Description: Three presentations that will be given at the JALT International Conference can also be seen here. First, Dan McCourt will provide details about an exchange program that he coordinated between a Korean University and his college, using Yahoo Groups. Then, Joe Lauer will explain about a similar study he conducted, involving Blogs and e-mail exchanges with students at a Taiwanese college. Finally, Maria Trovela and Carol Fujii will lead a discussion about students' self-evaluation of class participation.
