Reasons Why Experienced EFL Teachers Stay Positive and Motivated

Description: EFL teaching is, according to some people, a marginal profession, with no clear career progression or much material reward. In such circumstances it can be difficult to remain upbeat and motivated about one's work, and many teachers do leave after a relatively short time. But many others remain committed and enthusiastic when a more obvious response would be to be cynical and detached. This workshop will examine reasons for this commitment and discuss how it is possible for participants to retain (or regain) their enthusiasm in the long term.

Through her own anecdotes, Ms. Okuda will talk about the problems/issues that students will face and skills that they need in order to survive academic study overseas. OUP has a video-based series, 'Lecture Ready', that trains students in the listening and language skills they need during lectures in their future study.

Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) in ELT (English Language Teaching) in Vietnamese Schools - Reality and Solutions

Description: This is a special event with a scholar, Tran Van Phuoc, who is also speaking at the National JALT Conference in Tokyo. The research analyzes 5 aspects and 38 problems related to (1) teachers' understanding of CLT in ELT and their actual performance in classroom; (2) teachers' organisation of teaching activities in class; (3) existing textbooks and teaching-learning materials; (4) teaching facilities; (5) teachers' suggestions. The presentation reaffirms the on-going application of CLT and presents the realistic solutions: (1) re-understanding about the principles of CLT; (2) a methodology appropriate to the Vietnamese context; (3) an interlingual Vietnamese-English.
