This presentation/workshop is targeted toward helping teachers understand the statistics that are used in language journals and for teachers who are interested in doing research using statistics. As a group we will look at practical ways to implement a needs analysis suitable for a variety of settings. Let a new approach to needs analysis provide a fresh look at the coming academic year.

Of all the approaches to teaching foreign languages, task-based language teaching (TBLT) has received the most support from the second-language research community for almost a decade. The reason for this is that TBLT meets the minimum criteria for an effective approach: many learners find it motivating, communicative input and opportunities for learners to produce communicative output are provided, and a focus on grammar and vocabulary is effectively contextualized. This workshop will provide participants with the opportunity to experience TBLT first hand by participating in a task-based lesson. Discussions will focus on evaluating individual activities and considering how they can best be implemented in Japan.

Process and Thought: Two Articles that have Shaped EFL Writing Instruction
Two paradigm-shaping articles have shaped the field of EFL writing instruction. Neither article is recent or known for its research methods, but each has led to a new school of thought. One article introduced the concept of process, while the other defined contrastive rhetoric. Curtis Kelly, a professor at Heian Jogakuin University, will discuss the fascinating theories these articles have spawned, discuss how English and Japanese are organized differently, and give suggestions for how to teach organization in class. This presentation will be of value to anyone teaching in Japan, including Japanese wishing to improve their writing skills.
Stories for the Heart
Stories are magic. If you have ever told one in the classroom, then you know their power. They are more comprehensible than any other format, and they touch the learners' hearts. As one college student wrote: "The story makes me grow up every time." But to understand the secret of their power we have to examine how our brains have evolved and the theory from psychology of "moral development". The presenter will discuss these theories and give you five heart-warming stories to try out in your own college or high school English classes.

Four skills teaching materials for the conversation classroom from a non-profit, self-published text will be presented.

Study Skills Strategies for First Year College

Description: A double difficulty for young college students can be learning how to deal with general academic requirements, while simultaneously learning how tomeet specific classroom behavioural and cultural expectations of foreign teachers. In this demonstration, we will outline a Study Skills course begun in the spring of 2000 at a private women\'s university in Nagasaki. The curriculumis based on six overarching strategies we identified as common needs, regardless of student backgrounds: goal setting, motivation, resources, how to improve general language skills, time management, and cultural issues. All of these are integrated with language skills in an evolving course.

Addressing Relevance and Motivation
Motivation is crucial for successful learning. What techniques should we employ to encourage motivation and maximize learning? Two ways are:
1. to ensure learners talk about what interests them, and
2. to teach language for specific real-world functions.
High-interest, relevant content, presented at an appropriate level, and clear, achievable task-based activities, will further enhance learning and involvement. This presentation will explore these and other issues. Activities will be drawn from appropriate new materials from Longman.
A World of Resources for Teachers of Children
As English teachers of children we all experience the fun of teaching young and very young learners but we also know the challenges of creating and keeping motivation and interest. In this workshop we will explore the current teaching approaches of teaching children through discovery of language, multi-sensory involvement and multi-learning styles. We will uncover how we can inspire and transport our children into a magical realm of storybooks and games, transforming words and dialogues into songs, rhymes, chants, helping our young learners master the art of remembering English.
