Greetings from the Coordinator: Eric Skier

For any of you like me, teaching older learners in Japan isn't really work; it is more like a hobby. The students are energetic, self-directing, intrinsically motivated, and more than willing to verbalize any questions they have. Having taught older learners for the past 13 years at NHK Culture Centers in Tokyo, I feel truly privileged and feel no shame in admitting that over the years I have learned just as much from my students as they have learned from me?and I am still learning!

Which brings me to the reason that our interest group came into being (and I think we can all agree that teaching older learners is not the same as teaching children or young adults or even business people) and what we, as teacher-researchers, should be doing in our classrooms to optimize the learning experience for our students. Although the SIG is still young, I strongly believe that the collective amount of experience that we as members possess is surely impressive and should be shared with the EFL field in general. Whether it is on paper or in conferences and workshops, I sincerely hope to hear more of your voices in the near future. As I stated in the e-mail sent to the SIG membership last month, we may have the opportunity to participate in at least three conferences this coming year. So, please feel free to use these opportunities! And don't be intimidated by others. EFL is a relatively new field, so no one has all the answers!

Other than teaching and researching older learners for the past 13 years, you may wonder what else I have been up to. Well, quite a bit actually. I am a husband, a father, an Assistant Professor at Tokyo University of Pharmacy and Life Science, a published researcher in the fields of autonomy, EFL, CALL, ESP, content-based instruction, and even the relationship between kendo (I am 4-dan) and the study of English (take a look at 五輪の章 (go-rin no shou), The Book of Five Rings, and see for yourself!). I earned my master's degree in TESOL from Teachers College, Columbia University here in Tokyo but am more than willing to acknowledge that the more I learn, the less I really know. From about five years ago, I became pretty involved with JALT and the Learner Development (LD) SIG. Since then I have helped in many roles: member-at-large of the LD SIG; co-editor of a book on autonomy (MAYA); featured speaker and liaison for the national conference; reader for the national conference proceedings and for submissions for presenting at the JALT National Conference; and Editorial Advisory Board member of The Language Teacher. Whew! In short, though, if I can do it so can you!

You may wonder why older learners of English are so enthusiastic and motivated. If you have made casual observations about your classes, lessons, or learners, have you thought about doing research? You could investigate learner motivation, their comfort level in asking questions, out-of-class experiences, and so on. If you haven't, what are you waiting for? This is the perfect forum for you to share your research. Never fear! The LLL SIG is here to support you in your efforts. A number of us seasoned vets in the SIG will be more than happy to work with you to get you published. I think you would be surprised too by what you find, but it all starts with a question. If you aren't sure how to go about asking or researching a question you have, then feel free to ask. For those of you not quite comfortable with the term "research" altogether, your contribution to the SIG and the SIG newsletter may take one of many forms: sharing a successful lesson plan, a picture of you and your students, a testimonial from one of your students on his or her English studies, or sharing your experience and observations in a panel discussion. Lastly, allow me to share with you one of my favorite quotes from Alfred North Whitehead, "The 'silly' question is the first intimation of some totally new development." I sincerely believe that if we in the LLL SIG take this quote to heart, there will be no limit to what we as a group can accomplish.

日本で私のように高齢者に英語を教えている人たちは、それを仕事として捉えているよりは、趣味として楽しんでいると言えます。生徒たちは元気一杯で、自律していて、心から学ぶことを楽しみ、積極的に質問します。私は東京のNHK文化センターで13年間高齢者に英語を教えてきましたが、本当にこの仕事で恩恵を受けてきました。私は生徒に英語を教えているわけですが、私も同時に生徒から学んできました。今もそうです。仕事ではなく、趣味のように楽しめる理由はここにあります（高齢者を教えることは、子どもや若者、会社員を教えるのと違うことはみなさん同意していただけますよね）。わたしたちは、教師や研究者として生徒の学習環境を整えてあげる必要があります。

まだLLL SIGは若いですが、会員のみんなが持っている経験を合わせるとそれは偉大なものになり、英語教育分野でそれを分かち合う価値があります。近い将来、ニューズレターやメールで、あるいは大会やワークショップなどの機会で、会員のみなさんからの声を聞けることを心から楽しみにしています。先月、みなさんにお送りしたeメールでもお話しましたが、2007年には少なくとも３つの大会や研究会に参加する機会があります。この機会をどうぞお見逃し無く！　大会で発表することに怖気づかないでください。英語教育の分野自体が新しいので、誰だって何が正しいのか分かっていないのですから。

13年間高齢者を教えるほかに私が何をしていたか興味がおありですか？　うーん、かなりいろいろな顔を持っていますよ。夫であり、父親であり、東京薬科大学の講師であり、Autonomy, EFL, CALL, ESP, content-based instructionなどの分野、さらには剣道（私は四段の有段者です）と五輪の章の関係まで研究して論文を執筆している研究者です。東京にあるコロンビア大学大学院でTESOLの修士号を取得しましたが、実際のところ勉強すればするほど、分からないことが増えてくるのです。５年ほど前に、JALTとLD SIGに深く関わるようになりました。それ以来、さまざまな形で、JALTの活動に参加してきました。例えばLDの積極的なメンバーとして、Autonomyに関する本の編集者として、大会での基調講演者の世話係として、大会発表原稿集や大会発表応募原稿の査読者として、TLTの編集諮問委員として。ふーっ。つまり、私にできたのですから、みなさんにも出来るってことが言いたいわけです。

どうして高齢の生徒たちが英語を学ぶことに熱心で動機付けられているのか不思議に思ったことがありますか？　自分が教えているクラスや生徒のことをなんとなく観察したことがあるのなら、その疑問について研究してみようかなと思ったことはありませんか？生徒の動機、彼らが質問するときの緊張の度合い、教室外での経験などを研究テーマにできます。もしまだ研究を始めていないのなら、どうですか、やってみませんか？　LLLは、みなさんの研究をシェアする最適の場です。心配はありません。研究してみようと頑張る人を助けるためにLLLは存在しているのです。論文を執筆して発表するためのサポートを喜んでいたします。自分の研究結果に驚くことになるかもしれませんよ。でもまずは「問い」を持つことから研究は始まります。もし、自分の持っている「問い」をどのように研究に結びつけたらいいのかが分からないのなら、どうぞ聞いてください。「研究」ということ自体がピンとこない人は、別の形でLLLに関わることができます。例えばうまくいったレッスンプランや、あなたと生徒さんの写真、生徒さんが英語を学んだ証しなどをニューズレターで紹介したり、大会のパネルディスカッションで経験談をシェアしたりすることもできます。
